Sorry, OP. I haven't seen the show but I'm familiar with the books. Claire/Jaime is the author's OTP and it really, really shows.

This comment confuses me. Are authors not allowed to write whatever pairings they want? Do they have to be relegated to "shipping" the way the fans do?

The books were written ages ago. The show mostly follows the books. The story is sbout a married woman who travels in time, is forced into a second marriage and falls in love with her new husband. That she was happy with her first husband but appears to choose the 2nd over the 1st has upset the OP.

Maybe what they mean is that the author's preference of Claire/Jaime overshadows the development the characters actually get, and Claire's choosing Jaime over her husband isn't dealt with properly?

While I agree with you that a canon couple isn't the same as shipping, the way anon uses it makes me think that the author is going "of course they're meant to be together" without actually showing that (same as a lot of shippy fics do. You read them because you ship the characters already, and nobody needs to convince you that the ship works).

Well, Outlander is thinly-veiled Doctor Who fanfic, so treating it as shipping's actually kind of appropriate...

Also, unlike a lot of canon-shipping arguments, the female lead's married to two men, and spends a significant chunk of the first installment wanting to get back to her modern husband, so the investment in that couple's intentionally built, even if Claire does fall for Jaime later.

I didn't say anything about authors not being allowed to write whatever they want, though? My point to the OP was that the books are very strongly Jamie/Claire, so if OP wasn't interested in that ship (and the secret suggests they might not be) then the books wouldn't give them any joy.

I guess I felt that was implied by your wording. Your point is fair though.

OP

That is fine if she wants to write it that way. It is her books. But cheating is something I can't abide except where it is necessary. Claire surviving in the past meant she had to marry Jaime. But once she had the choice and chose Jaime, I was done. It was a good show. I enjoyed it and the characters. But this is just a hard line thing for me.

I thought the lead in to that was stupid. The rocks could have just not worked, or she could have visibly wrestled with the decision, or gone back to Frank and gradually realized her heart was still with Jamie. She was so vehement about getting back to Frank until Jamie sheds a few tears? Shit.

I stuck with it, but the prolonged rape/torture in the prison turned me away from S2 or the books. Meh.

FWIW, she wrestles with the issue more in the books and she does go back to Frank for a period of time. But eventually, she returns to the past, specifically for Jamie.
