To be honest, randomly "gifting" someone fanfic seems a little arrogant to someone, unless there's a specific reason behind it you know they'll appreciate. Like... "here's something awesome I did, just for you." Unless it's short, it seems like a way of ensuring you'll feel obligated to read their work.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the purpose?

Not the OP but I feel akward about gift fics for this exact reason. I don't think I'd randomly gift someone because it feels too much like an obligation or a "HERE READ MY FIC YOU HAVE TO BECAUSE I MADE IT FOR YOU" bid for attention. I'd also feel weird if someone I didn't even know gifted me one, just as I'd feel awkward if a stranger on the bus randomly handed me a present.

Yeah, I was wondering at these gifts. I've only ever seen people give fics for birthdays and special events like that, and once a year doesn't seem like that much of a hassle. Giving people random unsolicited fic sounds kinda strange to me.

could be that they're influencial enough that they inspire fic set in their fic universe? or maybe they mention premises of fic they find interesting?

I've done that now and again, but generally only in cases where the recipient has prompted the fic (either becauser I've found an old prompt of theirs, or because a random comment or meta sparked an idea.)
