The great auk. That wonderful penguin of the north. It is so tragic, we came so close to being able to save it. If it could have just hung on for another decade then the nascent avian conservation movement would have saved it. It was just gathering steam as a movement when the last few were killed.

The Thylacine is a close second, for the same reason. I keep holding out hope that some of the sightings might one day turn out to be credible and it isn't extinct after all, but the longer it takes the less likely it seems.

+1 on the thylacine. Watching those videos of it makes me sad, because they were so fucking weird and awesome. Like a marsupial dog, with a crazy huge jaw. Also both sexes have pouches, because apparently dude thylacines need something to keep their dicks in.

The great auk was the first animal that I learned was extinct rather than just not around anymore. I know that seems like a bit of a hair slitting difference, but things like dinosaurs and dodos, when I was growing up they fell into the category of things that used to be but just aren't. I was a kid and I had yet to put together the state of not being around and actually dying out, then I came across a story about the great auk and how people had actively (and yes I know we did the same to the dodo, but I didnt have that information when I was a kid) killed them all. How they weren't just not around, but not around anymore due to people; ordinary people! That really shook me up.

So, yeah. Great auk, my favorite lost animal and the one I'd Jurassic Park back t life ahead of all the others. It's got that personal connection.

Thylacines were so cool. There's just nothing else remotely like them. I'm not saying it's okay is species go extinct as long as something simiar remains, but it's really sad that there was such an interesting looking animal and now it's gone because we killed it.
