Quagga. I read a story about a boy in Africa who watched a quagga come to the waterhole by his village every day, and each day he got closer and closer to it, hoping some day to be able to ride it (kids, am I right), and one day the quagga was gone and he never saw another one because that was the last one and now they were extinct. Made me sad for weeks. I was 7 or so when I read the story.

Through selective breeding of zeebras, people have managed to make animals that sort of *look* like quaggas.

But they are still just mutant Zebras and not Quagga. The only way we are going to get the Quagga, or Great Auk, or any lost animal, back is by going Jurassic Park with the cloning and the tech just is not there yet. You know what is worse? Testing whether the tech is there yet, or the gene sequencing complete enough, may use all the remaining samples of some of the lesser represented species. Dodo remains, for example, are really rare because they were not excessively collected before their extinction (most Dodo specimens in museums and collections are actually replica or mock up, there is not a single complete example of a Dodo anywhere in the world) and most have been lost or stored in such a way the DNA has been damaged. The Dodo might actually be doubly extinct, killed once, and then its remains destroyed enough that even cloning can't save it.

And that's sad.
