Internet challenged young adults

(Anonymous) 2016-03-26 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I've gone back to school for my degree in my mid 30s, and most of my classmates are around 15 years younger than me. And I'm finding a lot of them don't really know how the internets work. Email is a challenge for one of them, she never gets her messages. Another one doesn't really understand social media (except she has a Facebook that she constantly shows me meme comics on), and she has the most godawful cutesey texting speech quirks.

What has happened to the world? Why are all the kids technologically inept grandparents all of a sudden?

It makes sense to me in a weird way.

At one point, nobody but a rare few knew how to use the internet.

Then there was an age in which everyone started using it, except you had to know how a lot of things worked in order to use it properly. That's where most of FS falls.

Now, so many people are on the internet that it's been dumbed down for the lowest common denominator. Everything is bite-size and you have children who text and chat all day who don't know a thing about how email or websites work.

Because they've been raised on inept technology?

Most of them are big smart phone users. And smart phone interfaces and site versions are usually simplified and really dumbed down. Everything's a picture that you touch with your hand to get somewhere--it feels like playing with a toddler's toy.

App versions (such as the Gmail app) often have stripped functionality, so it's no wonder they're challenged by email--if you primarily use the Gmail app, which has no native function to let you attach a file to your email, why would you even know such a fuction exists, let alone how to use it?

Furthermore, smart phone creators hate for their users to be able to customize or change anything in the phone--tons of capabilities that you have on a desktop are missing, for no good reason. You have to hack the phone and void the warranty to get even the most basic amount of control over them.

I feel this way sometimes about my students, but mainly in regards to social media. They don't understand how important privacy is and why it's a bad idea to put your private phone number on your public Instagram or Tumblr. They really don't get that the internet is forever and never forgets. I've gotten papers with emojis and chat speak. It drives me nuts sometimes.

I've gotten papers with emojis and chat speak.

Oh please tell me you're kidding.

I wish I was kidding. I really, really do. "Romeo was totes :( when Juliet died, so he killed himself. I think Shakespeare did this cuz he wanted people to know that people who are teenagers make stupid decisions, but I truly believe he was wrong because he's old and doesn't know what being young is like". That was an actual sentence from a paper I graded.

doesn't know what being young is like
doesn't know what being young is like
because... he's old.
key. Sounds legit.

I can't speak for emojis, but I definitely know students think it's okay to use chat speak and other excessively casual language in their papers. Papers that they've finished, proofread, and submitted for grading. How did these people pass the SATs and AP tests required to be admitted to this university?!

I've been one of those people. One specific example I remember submitting is describing the Iliad being an angst-filled soap opera about Achilles crying over his dead bf forever.

I was not, believe it or not, an idiot that was convinced it was okay to do. I merely didn't give a shit, because it was a pass/fail elective. I passed.

I feel most people I know are technologically inept. I recently learned that my best friend has no clue when it comes to internet slang. I had to explain to him what "da faq" meant. I also have to constantly explain to him what acronyms are really saying.

Because everything has become streamlined and super easy to use. The less of a learning curve, the better it sells. That's why.
