It's actually in a Huge Important Scene (the immediate aftermath of the big twist), but I always always love this small moment in State of Play when Cal comes back to the office and he's clearly upset and surrounded by all the other reporters and Della (who already sort of knows what's up) zeroes in on him and is just like "Did you get it on tape, yes or no?" and John Simm just nods in the saddest, smallest way and it kills me every time. It's such an encapsulation of everything that the show is about (we want to accomplish things but at what cost) and is in such contrast to how in control he was in the scene just before when he was confronting the bad guy.

I haven't thought about State of Play in YEARS! You're so right, though. I watched for John Simm but Della was my favourite and that scene was part of the reason why. I also loved how she handled DCI Bell and ended up kinda shipping it but mostly I just loved how none of the characters ended up being the people you first met.

ayrt - Della is THE BEST omg. And loved her with Bell, but also loved her and Cal and the very strong but platonic friendship they established from the beginning. And yes, no one is exactly who they were at the beginning. It's such an excellent series.
