Little movie/show scenes you love

(Anonymous) 2016-03-26 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Not those huge important awesome scenes or ideas that gets a lot of focus or makes a big difference to the plot, but the little things: a minor glossed-over scene, a scene that's meant to be practical/exposition but actually is very thought-provoking, or a background event, or a particular element of a larger scene, or someone's facial expression/body language during a scene. That sort of thing.

And of course, explain why you love it so much!

I love when Smaug starts to move and Bilbo just sits down like, "I'm not here."

I also love the facial expressions he throws at the dwarves while he's talking to the trolls, and he's so done with them.

One of my absolute favorite things about the LOTR movie trilogy is the way Merry and Pippin are the first ones to follow Aragorn in charging the Black Gate in ROTK -- before all the human soldiers, before Legolas and Gimli and Gandalf. It just makes me so goddamn happy and it's so perfect.

OMG YES. That was one of the short list of things I thought the movies did better than the books (and not just in a "well, this wouldn't have worked so well on film as on paper, so I get why they changed it" way, but as an actual story element.)

I loved that part too.

I love that tiny little moment in Love Actually when Daniel tries to flatten Sam's hair when they get to the school for the Christmas concert. They're my favourite relationship in the movie and it's such a sweet little moment.

I love them so much in that movie.

It's actually in a Huge Important Scene (the immediate aftermath of the big twist), but I always always love this small moment in State of Play when Cal comes back to the office and he's clearly upset and surrounded by all the other reporters and Della (who already sort of knows what's up) zeroes in on him and is just like "Did you get it on tape, yes or no?" and John Simm just nods in the saddest, smallest way and it kills me every time. It's such an encapsulation of everything that the show is about (we want to accomplish things but at what cost) and is in such contrast to how in control he was in the scene just before when he was confronting the bad guy.

I haven't thought about State of Play in YEARS! You're so right, though. I watched for John Simm but Della was my favourite and that scene was part of the reason why. I also loved how she handled DCI Bell and ended up kinda shipping it but mostly I just loved how none of the characters ended up being the people you first met.

I like in War of the Worlds when Tom Cruise claps his hands in frustration at his kids so they pay attention. It is such a dad move.

Not a moment, but I love Tom Hardy's cowlick in Mad Max.

When Jack Skellington finds the clearing and says "It's someplace new!", and you see the pure joy of having found something *different* after being depressed about everything being the same light up in his hollow eye sockets.

The Last Five Years is a frankly fantastic movie that I have seen way too many times considering it just came out last year, but rewatching the other day, I realized that just before 'If I Didn't Believe In You,' when Cathy is arguing with Jamie and he's insisting that he's listening to her, they are actually having two completely separate arguments. As in, none of his answers make sense given what she's saying. It really hammers home how out of touch the two are by that point.

There's an episode of My Little Pony where, as part of the 'we have all learned a valuable lesson about friendship here today' wrap-up, Applejack puts cucumber slices over Rarity's eyes. (It makes sense in context.) Rarity tries to hug her, but of course she can't see where Applejack is because of the cucumber slices, so she just flails her hoof in Applejack's general direction for a little bit until Applejack steps forward and leans into her. I like it because it's a cute visual gag, but even more because it's evidence that someone actually thought the cucumber gag through and recognized that it would have an effect on subsequent actions. I appreciate knowing that the people who make the stuff I enjoy are paying attention to their own work.

Oh man a million of these so here is one: the Newsradio episode 'Kids'. One of the plots of the episode is that Lisa thinks that Dave (who she's dating, and also they work in the same office, it's a workplace sitcom) is hiding just massive amounts of porn at work, which he's not, but there's a whole thing, blah blah blah sitcoms. So anyway, Dave says something like "Imagine how embarrassed I am that everyone thinks I'm heading porn around the office," and Lisa says, "Well, why are you embarrassed about it if it's not yours?" And then she gives this little, like, bobbing head nod for a second or two, looking at Dave, and then she just rushes out of the room like she can't deal with it anymore.

And it's just this, like, perfect physical encapsulation of consternation and person-trying-not-to-freak-out and someone who doesn't want it to be that way but very definitely thinks it is that way. It's perfect. It's a physical gesture that has levels to it. I think part of it is that it's very much a left turn from the typical sitcom move - the typical sitcom thing would be to treat that as a zinger-type laugh line and just dwell on it. But instead Newsradio goes to a totally different place that's much more interesting. But it's also just a really great physical moment from Maura Tierney as an actress that I fucking love. Like, she just plays it so, so well.

Also it's cute as a button but, you know.

Ugh Newsradio was so good.

In LOTR Return of the King: after the army on the Pellenor Fields sees Barad-Dur fall and realize Frodo has destroyed the Ring, the reactions are so great: the army is overjoyed and utterly exhilarated. Most of the Fellowship is partly relieved, partly shocked and solemn, or conflicted.

And then Pippin is just bawling his eyes out and screaming with grief, because he's like the Hobbit equivalent of a 17 or 18 year old kid and he probably can't quite grasp, except on the intellectual level, how serious and important it was to destroy the Ring, but he can grasp perfectly well the fact that that it seems undeniable that Frodo and Sam are currently being incinerated and will never be coming back.

A part of that scene from Jurassic Park where they're in the egg-hatching area. That moment of realization on Dr. Grant's part that he's holding a velociraptor, just before he asks what species it is, is great.

It's not a favorite film of mine, but the scene where Bruce is making Evan talk in Bruce Almighty makes me roll on the floor with laughter everytime. It's such a silly scene but oh god, it really tickles me for some reason.

In star wars return of the Jedi, the scene where everything is going to shit on the death star and poor small battered Luke is struggling to drag Vader's dead weight to a shuttle. :(

And it really is pivotal to the plot, but I love in galaxy quest, when they see on the view screen the aliens dying in their crew quarters and Jason's face goes completely serious and you can just see the resolve take over. Completely wordless and great acting on Tim Allen's part.

There's a scene in The Usual Suspects that involves Kevin Spacey being interrogated by Chazz Palmintieri, and he makes this teeny tiny smile with just his eyes when Palmintieri walks behind him, then immediately lets his eyes go blank once Palmintieri comes back around to face him. It is so small most people wouldn't catch it, but it's there.

That reminds me of another scene -- in Ghost Dog with Forest Whitaker, where he plays a hit man who lives as a modern-day samurai, there's a scene where he walks down a sidewalk full of people, but "coincidentally" they all happen to turn away at the moment they would have seen him, so in effect, he was invisible to them. The scene is shot such that this is handled subtly, so it's likely many viewers wouldn't notice what had just happened.

A deleted scene from CA:TFA where Cap is just riding the train (El?), just...sitting there. And he looks so lost and alone and confused by everything around him. It's like three seconds, but it says so much.

The houseboat scene in Zodiac remains one of my favorite scenes in anything, ever, even though it's of virtually no consequence to the plot

Half-Blood Prince: When Harry and Dumbledore get back to the castle and (in a departure from the book), Snape brings a finger to his lips to keep Harry from giving them away, and Harry looks at him briefly with this expression of complete trust. For all the shit, he trusted him in that moment. AND THEN...

The Middle: Pretty much every time Frankie is being ridiculous about something and Mike just looks at her like "I love you so much, you crazy lady."

I'm sure there are more because it's moments like that that keep me watching things I otherwise would have given up on long ago, but that's all I've got for now.

I think it's the Hobbit BOFA. I watched the films, but didn't love them, but I'm pretty sure it's from the last one. Basically, after the ongoing discord between Legolas and his father, the scene where Thranduil says "Your mother loved you very much" is just brilliant. Because in their father/son relationship, that's all that he's able to offer to his son - your mother loved you. Wow.

There's a scene in, I think, She's All That where after everyone fell into the pool the camera suddenly focused on these two guys who where reenacting the "I will never let go Jack" scene from Titanic. I wish I could find that scene again.
