Re: Is it rude to assume that someone is straight?

Setting aside any other questions with the question you're asking or your data: "96.6% of people identify as straight" is a profoundly different claim from "96.6% of people are straight".

Not really all that different considering (unless you are monitoring everyone in the world and their fucking habits), people identifying themselves is the only way to get stats.

da

I'd imagine the responses of people willingly identifying as anything other than straight would vary tremendously depending on where the questions were asked. Even if you're bi or gay, you're gonna tell people you're straight in some places.

No. Wrong. Absolutely wrong.

Self-identification is the only thing that we can meaningfully get data for. That does not mean that it is the only thing that exists. If we can't get reliable information on people's actual sexual identity, that just means that we can't get information on them. They remain two separate categories. Insufficient data on actual identity does not justify drawing incorrect conclusions by looking at totally different stats. It means we have insufficient data to reach a conclusion.

Considering the high cost many people face if they identify themselves as something other than straight? NO.

Stats that rely on self-reporting or self-identification are recognized as being potentially unreliable, though.

Yeah, a lot of times that's the only way we can get data. However, that doesn't mean that the data is accurate.
