Helm's Deep in The Two Towers. Far superior to the Battle of Pellenor Fields, IMO. Honorable mention to The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring when the Ringwraiths sneak up on the hobbits at Weathertop.

Yesssss the Pellenor Fields had some great moments but it was rather too big and flashy and plain given its screentime. Helm's Deep was just a fantastic battle scene from start to finish on all levels. Just the right amount of special effects, and perfect buildup and tone, great pacing and tangible progression and ebb and flow, especially in the theatrical version, with a great quantity of appropriate pain and harrowingness (the 14-15 year old boys being fitted with weapons and armor), lightened by just the right amount of comic relief and camaraderie between Legolas/Gimli/Aragorn, and balanced out well by the Ents scenes and a great ending. I have, like, zero criticisms about that entire battle except that I was kind of disappointed they didn't do the book version of Legolas and Gimli's reunion in the aftermath.

nayrt

I didn't like the inclusion of the elves at Helm's Deep in the movie version (it kinda fucks with the point of the battle in the larger picture, showing that the race of men can hold their own without elves, further enhancing the point that the time of the elves is over), but that's the only thing I don't like about it and it's not too big a problem.

nayrt - I know it's not canon, but I loved that moment too much to complain. I choke up every time Haldir shows up and Aragorn embraces him, and I love the tragedy of such a small troop of Elves and how they died. It felt like an important symbolic gesture, their last contribution to Middle Earth and the race of men.

IA. Pellenor Fields was flashy, maybe a bit too flashy like they tried to make everything bigger and better. It did have its moments but it lacked the exquisite tension and build of Helm's Deep, and it lacked the heart of that battle.
