So I finally saw the new Star Wars movie.....(spoilers!)
Poe was just kinda dull, as was Kylo. It was spiff to see Han and Chewie and Leia again, disappointed that all they really talked about was Kylo.
Very fun to see the Millenium Falcon again, and all the pretty stages and sets and 'planets'. I really liked the idea/design/look of the evil planet-killing planet.
I was, to me, basically Star Wars (the original) retold with a new set of actors. And i'm okay with that, but not blown away. I thought the final scene between Han and Kylo was majorly anti-climatic and predictable (and not remotely tear jerking).
Glad, basically, that I didn't pay to see it.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-26 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)I think Poe was really good as a minor character. I definitely expected him to be more prominent, but for someone who's in the movie so little, he's more than charming enough. Also I guess he sort of gets rubbed-off adorability credits for being so closely associated with Finn and Rey in my head...
Re: So I finally saw the new Star Wars movie.....(spoilers!)
I guess...Poe was just kinda *there*? He didn't really have a personality, to me, he was just a kind of icon, rather than a person. I dunno.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-27 02:26 am (UTC)(link)Also I feel like probably TFA benefited from the fact that the prequels had completely destroyed my expectations for everything Star Wars. So almost anything would have been pleasantly better than expected, and "competent, fun New Hope redux" was well over the bar.
Re: So I finally saw the new Star Wars movie.....(spoilers!)
Yeah, the prequels were *so* bad. It's such a shame.

I'm not sure which that is. Something inside Llywellen? Or something? I didn't see that, if that's the one.
Re: So I finally saw the new Star Wars movie.....(spoilers!)
(TFA's Adam Driver is also in it for a hot second, which is kind of fun, and also makes me want Episode VIII to be a musical, regardless of how little sense that'd make. The only thing I'd need to know is whether or not John Boyega sings. Then we're set.)
Re: So I finally saw the new Star Wars movie.....(spoilers!)
It's a fun movie, but not great. Like you, I was happy with Rey and Finn, underwhelmed with Poe and Kylo. The problem with Poe and Kylo I think is that they're both defined by how other characters feel about them; they're not really their own characters. Hopefully, the subsequent films will change that.
I'm personally glad I paid to see it, because I think it's the type of movie that lends itself well to the big screen, and also because I saw it on a date night with my husband, and getting to go out with him sans baby made it worth it, heh.

My gripe about Finn was that I wanted him to be more of an ex-Stormtrooper, and they didn't do so much with it. He wasn't "weird" enough and seemed way too socialized.
It was fun, but not much more imo.
Re: So I finally saw the new Star Wars movie.....(spoilers!)
YES. I mean - retraining, or whatever? Which would seem like mind-wiping or brainwashing or something? And since he was a kid? He would *not* be that...normal, yes. And who sends a 'sanitation' guy out on a raid?
Re: So I finally saw the new Star Wars movie.....(spoilers!)
I was also kind of bummed at the Cantina scene. In the first movie, it was so strange and you could see Luke was out of his depth, and of course all the music was amazing. This one was just... it felt out of place. Ironically, even though I've been a fan so long I don't remember when the first time I saw the movie was, I wish it had been a bit less heavy on the nostalgia and given me more new stuff (like, plot for example. A plot that is not A New Hope).
The characters were adorable, though. Rey and Finn had great chemistry and were super cute. The dialogue was also snappy. It was technically well done, just... it didn't have the magic.
Re: So I finally saw the new Star Wars movie.....(spoilers!)
I was like 'oh, Cantina. Look, aliens. Just like...before.' There was just no...*newness* to it. I swear, some of the scenes were frame by frame.
Rey and Finn are *so* great, i could watch them all day. :)
Re: So I finally saw the new Star Wars movie.....(spoilers!)
At the moment, for me the original trilogy remains the True Star Wars.
Re: So I finally saw the new Star Wars movie.....(spoilers!)
Didn't even make me sniffle. It was just...without a scrap of emotion.
I didn't know they were making more, so - yeah, let's hope something good happens. :)
Re: So I finally saw the new Star Wars movie.....(spoilers!)
I was mostly disappointed that Leia didn't get more to do, tbh.
I assume they're making more? I mean this movie made shittons of money, and it's all set up for a sequel what with the mysteries about Rey's parents and meeting Luke and whatnot. It's pretty clearly the start of a new trilogy.
Also goddammit, can we have a major movie whose climax ISN'T a large flying object which will kill lots of people that has to be destroyed? Please??
Re: So I finally saw the new Star Wars movie.....(spoilers!)
I was, too, about Leia - maybe next time? I mean - she has the 'force' ability, as well - I wish they'd remember that!
