Re: So I finally saw the new Star Wars movie.....(spoilers!)

That's the big criticism: it was 'A New Hope: Redux.'

It's a fun movie, but not great. Like you, I was happy with Rey and Finn, underwhelmed with Poe and Kylo. The problem with Poe and Kylo I think is that they're both defined by how other characters feel about them; they're not really their own characters. Hopefully, the subsequent films will change that.

I'm personally glad I paid to see it, because I think it's the type of movie that lends itself well to the big screen, and also because I saw it on a date night with my husband, and getting to go out with him sans baby made it worth it, heh.

Yeah - fun, not great. I guess nothing will ever top that moment in the summer of '77 when those words first scrolled up the movie screen....

If you got to experience that, then yeah, probably not! That's a really high bar!

Heee. Yeah. It was fucking amazing (i was ten). It was the start of my utter love of all things sci fi.

I saw TFA with my mom, who was at one of the first screenings in '77 - so she had a similar disappointed reaction. It just doesn't have the same power and magic, you know?

My gripe about Finn was that I wanted him to be more of an ex-Stormtrooper, and they didn't do so much with it. He wasn't "weird" enough and seemed way too socialized.
It was fun, but not much more imo.

It really doesn't, even though i loved the 'junkyard' planet and scavenger!Rey, it was still not...the same.

YES. I mean - retraining, or whatever? Which would seem like mind-wiping or brainwashing or something? And since he was a kid? He would *not* be that...normal, yes. And who sends a 'sanitation' guy out on a raid?

Right?? Like, I get that the sanitation thing was supposed to be a joke, but it makes no sense. So much could have been done with him, and it just wasn't.

I was also kind of bummed at the Cantina scene. In the first movie, it was so strange and you could see Luke was out of his depth, and of course all the music was amazing. This one was just... it felt out of place. Ironically, even though I've been a fan so long I don't remember when the first time I saw the movie was, I wish it had been a bit less heavy on the nostalgia and given me more new stuff (like, plot for example. A plot that is not A New Hope).

The characters were adorable, though. Rey and Finn had great chemistry and were super cute. The dialogue was also snappy. It was technically well done, just... it didn't have the magic.

Exactly. The magic wasn't there.

I was like 'oh, Cantina. Look, aliens. Just like...before.' There was just no...*newness* to it. I swear, some of the scenes were frame by frame.

Rey and Finn are *so* great, i could watch them all day. :)

I'm kind of hoping the next one will be a little bolder and move into new territory, and kind of retroactively save this one for me. Then again, Abrams is the guy who gave us Star Trek Into Darkness which was a massive pile of garbage... so I'm a bit nervous about getting my hopes up.
At the moment, for me the original trilogy remains the True Star Wars.

Yeah, i think that's the biggest 'issue' - Abrams seems only able to get the gleaming surface of things, and never really see beneath that to the real *heart* of the story. I mean - i loved Han Solo. But his death scene?
Didn't even make me sniffle. It was just...without a scrap of emotion.

I didn't know they were making more, so - yeah, let's hope something good happens. :)

[personal profile] ketita 2016-03-27 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was disappointed by Han's death too. In the sense that it was telegraphed so hard, and the scene itself... it was so obvious Kylo was going to stab him. And at that point the whole movie felt a little unreal to me anyway, so I wasn't really torn up.
I was mostly disappointed that Leia didn't get more to do, tbh.

I assume they're making more? I mean this movie made shittons of money, and it's all set up for a sequel what with the mysteries about Rey's parents and meeting Luke and whatnot. It's pretty clearly the start of a new trilogy.

Also goddammit, can we have a major movie whose climax ISN'T a large flying object which will kill lots of people that has to be destroyed? Please??

Heee! Yes, that kind of climax *does* get a bit dull.

I was, too, about Leia - maybe next time? I mean - she has the 'force' ability, as well - I wish they'd remember that!
