Well, I have not written self-insert fanfic or submitted secrets recently, but I feel you on the crush-while-in-long-term-relationship-thing.

I haven't actually WRITTEN self-inserts since I was a teenager (and thank Chuck the internet wasn't a thing back then) but in my head, I'm playing out the fantasies of me/the person I find hottest in whatever fandom I'm in at the moment.

I still can't go to TV Tropes without seeing the relevant themes in my old works or my head, and wondering, " What the heck was I thinking? ".

OP here. I've had loads of fictional crushes before, and I always end up playing out the self-insert story in my mind (usually at bedtime, it always makes me feel less stressed out and helps me fall asleep). I've never written any of it, until I couldn't take it with this one anymore and just had to write it down.

It probably started like that for me, as well. I don't remember, to be honest, it was ages ago and I've been doing it for as long as I can remember. I do it more when I'm going through a tough time, and last year was bloody awful so I guess writing down the story was just another way for me to detach from the real world for a little bit every day. Still, I've never had a crush that lasted -this- long, and, although it doesn't really bother me on its own, the amount of secrets that got made because of it does make me feel a tad silly.
