I liked Mako in Season 1 of Korra. Not as a super-huge fan, but I found him sympathetic and relatable. I drove myself crazy trying to understand how most of the reasons fandom had for thinking he was utter irredeemable trash made sense.

This! I actually love Mako (but then I'm one of those rare people who has positive feelings about LoK as a whole...including season 2). I understand why some people might not agree with his actions but he was a dumb teenager who did dumb teenager things...hardly a monster. I think he grew up a lot over the series

mako did some occasional dickish things but in a human and normal way and his positives outweighed his negatives

i didn't like him and korra together but he was good as his own character
