Fandom Outcast

(Anonymous) 2016-03-27 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you ever feel like the fandom outcast or that you go against the grain in a certain fandom (whether it's because you ship an unusual pairing, interpret a character differently than most people, have a headcanon that hardly anyone else shares, etc)? Tell me about it!

There was a period in the Harry Potter fandom, right around the time I left, when I felt like that. Because I preferred Harry/Hermione, yet I wasn't okay with character bashing and really liked book 7 and didn't want to rant about how awful it was all the time. So I wasn't really at home on either side of the fandom. That's when I left, though I still read fics for a while.

I've always been a loner really, though. I've kind of accidentally become pretty well known in my tiny corner of the Silmarillion fandom thanks mostly to my headcanon posts. It is weird to be this well known. It is a totally new experience for me.

I was a R/Hr shipper, but hated the lording over it some of my fellow shippers took part in. Yes, our ship became official canon. Stop gloating like we discovered the Holy Grail. So I get it.

I think I was one of the few who liked the epilogue, too...

badass_tiger: Charles Dance as Lord Vetinari (Tyrant)

Re: Fandom Outcast

I'm less the outcast and more the loner by choice, haha. A year or two ago, Vimes/Vetinari got so prominent in the Discworld fandom, even though no one was really getting mad at me for not liking it or anything, I just stopped tracking the tag and now my sole participation in fandom is writing fic. I stopped following a lot of Disc blogs too, partly because I started a new Tumblr around this time, but partly because some argument went on about something (it was probably about Pterry being a misogynist, that's always a popular one) that I unfollowed and just didn't bother checking in again afterwards.

Now I really have no idea what the fandom is like, but sometimes people talk to me about Vetinari/Drumknott and people still leave kudos and comments on my fics, so I'm pretty happy with leaving it at that.

Not a CERTAIN fandom, but I feel like as a canon shipper who's mostly here for the meta, there's basically nowhere for me to go in fandom.

Re: Fandom Outcast

(Anonymous) 2016-03-27 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, my fandom's small and hivemind-y about everything. Not just characters and ships. It's like every minute detail of fandom participation has to be agreed upon as a group and enforced. It's really weird and not much fun for a free spirit like me, so I kinda gave up on participating.

Yyyyyyuuuuuuuuuuuuuppppp

I'm a fan of a series that isn't unknown in one of my older communities, but isn't as popular as most others. Well, one time there were some fanfiction contests going on so I decided to enter... unfortunately, the contest that was series-specific banned the one saga I'd had my heart set on, so my only other option was to write for the contest where nobody really cared about the series.

I didn't care about winning, I just wanted the attention for my story (I know, CRY MOAR). But it hurt more to be ignored in favor of fics of overhyped series than it did to just not win.

These days, though, I've just learned to accept my timing will suck a lot of the time and I just need to do what I want whether or not people give a shit.

I never fit into fandoms. I think that's just me though. I'm not a very likeable person, not witty and never say the right thing. C'est la vie.

Yes. In the Clarkson-Hammond-May fandom (new show title hasn't been announced yet and they're no longer Top Gear). If you don't worship at the altar of St. Jeremy of Clarkson--by ignoring that he's a problematic, vile excuse for a human being ("Oh, I met him once he was lovely"--well what about all the people he isn't lovely to?)--then you can count on being shunned/ignored/berated by others in the fandom. Especially if you have the absolute nerve to express your displeasure with him. Oh, and if you speak out against the current fic pairing du jour of Clarkson/May--you're shaming people. WTF?

I always laugh bitterly at posts that say the fandom is so welcoming and helpful. Yeah, only if you like Clarkson or at the least, don't publicly complain about his douchebaggery. Other than running a couple CHM side blogs on tumblr, I'm pretty much done with the fandom.

I always felt like kind of an outcast in the Torchwood fandom because I liked Gwen. I don't think she was perfect or anything but just about everyone on that show was super fucked up (it also made me lol that people would tear her down for the slightest thing but rationalized things like Ianto keeping his super fucking dangerous cyberwoman girlfriend hidden in the hub because he was their precious woobie. I loved Ianto too but come on). It wouldn't have been that bad if people had mostly restricted their Gwen hate to episode discussions/meta but the amount of Gwen bashing in fic reached insane levels. There were some times where it was difficult to find fic that didn't have Gwen bashing.

I liked Gwen too. Yeah, she fucked up sometimes, but who didn't on that show? And Ianto keeping his girlfriend hidden was way worse than her cheating on Rhys.

I really disliked Gwen in the 1st season but I came around and ended up loving her so much. Also, Eve Myles is lovely.

Outcast sounds a bit harsh, but yeah, all the time. Falling in love with old dead fandoms or being constantly late to the party, to not liking the fandom favourites (be it authors, characters, pairings), etc.

I'm always happy when I luck out and happen to fall in love with the popular stuff (which doesn't happen all that often).

I liked Mako in Season 1 of Korra. Not as a super-huge fan, but I found him sympathetic and relatable. I drove myself crazy trying to understand how most of the reasons fandom had for thinking he was utter irredeemable trash made sense.

tbh i dont try to make fandom friends, mainly because i fear that i will end up making friends who seem normal but later on become vicious about their pairing, character, show, etc.

Re: Fandom Outcast

ships i usually like are either the second most popular ship or a rare ship, occasionally i do ship the most popular pairing.

the reason i dont ship the most popular pairing is either:
a) i originally did like it but the fans made me dislike it
b) i just don't ship it
c) i just really like the other pairings

the previous paragraph makes me sound like a monoshipper but i'm usually a multishipper lol

Haha oh boy.

I ship an incest pairing in a fandom that hates said incest pairing and will harass people who ship it.

My fellow shippers are really, really nice. Like, absolutely fantastic. Some of the sweetest people I've interacted with over the 18 years I've spent in and out of fandom, and when it's just us, I feel more than welcome. But there are still times when I feel like an outcast, particularly when trying to engage in meta discussion. A number of months back, I reblogged someone's post, adding some meta of my own, and their response was to say that, due to my shipping preferences, I'm gross, and they were made uncomfortable by the mere fact that I interacted with them.

It's an interesting line to tread. But when I stick to my own corner, it's not so bad.

I react too much to social slights, imagined or otherwise. Social paranoid, I guess? So I'm sure if I'm outcast in some fandoms it's by my own design.

Hmm, I guess I go against grain in some fandoms, where the fans are super srs, and I just make fun of everything and write crack, so, naturally, fandom ignores me. Or that one time when I wrote slash in predominately het fandom. Never again!

Re: Fandom Outcast

(Anonymous) 2016-03-28 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. My OTP is popular, the most popular slash pairing in the fandom, but as much as I love the fic...I don't click with other shippers. It's frustrating because there will be ideas or potential AUs or meta that I want to discuss with other people, but I don't bother posting about it because I can already tell it doesn't jive with the overall feel of the pairing that the rest of the shippers ascribe to.

Re: Fandom Outcast

I was in the Outlast fandom but I ended up leaving because I felt like one of maybe five people who wasn't an Eddie Gluskin fanbrat or a Jeremy Blair fanbrat. You know the fandom stereotype of fans who turn mediocre white boy villains into woobies/sexy bad boys and draw nothing but porn and/or cutesy fanart of them? Imagine an entire fandom that is nothing BUT those people and that's the outlast fandom.

Yes several times. I think the biggest one was Gundam Wing. I was super into the het relationships particularly Duo/Hilde and Heero/Relena. Relena was one of my absolute favorite characters. However, I didn't hate the slash fandom like a lot of the het fans did. I was always uncomfortable with the bashing of it because I was all about femslash/slash (Zoisite/Kunzite and Uranus/Nepturne inparticular in Sailor Moon and sometimes the anti-slashers in Gundam Wing spilled into the Sailor Moon fandom. However, I still feel like an outsider when people reminisce about their time in Gundam Wing fandom because it's all about the slash and that wasn't what I was into.

Yes. My art is neither terrible nor great. I ship the characters, but I don't like to make them look exactly like the actors. A lot of people prefer the fanart that look more like them. I also ship pairs from older shows, less popular characters and one's people flat out hate. Generally I'm treated well, but until I get better I won't get much 'respect' for what I do.
