Re: Fandom Outcast

I was in the Outlast fandom but I ended up leaving because I felt like one of maybe five people who wasn't an Eddie Gluskin fanbrat or a Jeremy Blair fanbrat. You know the fandom stereotype of fans who turn mediocre white boy villains into woobies/sexy bad boys and draw nothing but porn and/or cutesy fanart of them? Imagine an entire fandom that is nothing BUT those people and that's the outlast fandom.

Yeah, I lasted like a week in the Outlast fandom. I did like that there were people there who didn't romanticize Gluskin and wrote Waylon/Gluskin fic that was as fucked up as it logically would be but the amount of woobie-ing and glossing over that Gluskin got was honestly surprising to me. I mean, I've seen a lot of villains get the woobie treatment but for some reason it was still kind of jarring to see someone as genuinely horrifying and disturbing as him be consistently turned into a benign pretty boy (I also hated how people used his childhood abuse to excuse all of his actions. What happened to him was tragic but holy shit that only goes so far). And don't get me started on the weird amount of highschool AUs in that fandom.

I didn't really see the same thing done for Blair but I deliberately avoided his tags and I don't doubt that it happens

I think what broke me was seeing a popular artist drawing Blaire as a Nazi because "Nazi uniforms are sexy lol!"
