The 'Better Homes & Gardens Cook Book' that my mom got me when I was getting married, back in '85. (She had one, too, from when *she* was married in '59.)

It can always give me basics like amounts and cooking times and techniques, and I'll generally just go on from there, or look up the same recipe online to see what other variations people have made, usually at Allrecipes.com
