I watched ATLA after everything aired. I hadn't heard anything about it when I watched it, but I ended up shipping Katara/Zuko big time. I just saw a lot of chemistry between them and I really liked the progression of their relationship. If anyone asks for a good example of the trope enemies-to-friends (lovers in my headcanon), this is the one I point to.

OH HI GUESS WHAT I AM REWATCHING RIGHT NOW. I am quite with you on this one; I really liked the way everything developed between them. And hell, everything about Zuko's development in general.

I think they did a great job with Zuko's redemption and making it believable. I also felt that Katara's emotions were genuine and realistic. I was very pleased how it came about. I'm not sure if having Katara/Zuko in the show itself would've worked (since he had to be Firelord and all), but I felt pretty emotionally satisfied with how things stood with them at the end.

(The Karara/Aang ship felt less developed to me actually.)

Yeah, I really agree about Katara/Aang. I don't think they were a bad match necessarily, but the show went from 'little kid with crush on maternal figure' to 'TRUE LOVE FOREVER' without hitting the needed steps in between.

Agreed! What's weird is that the conversation RIGHT before the finale was so clearly Katara backing off and looking like she was being pushed in a direction she didn't want to go. Obviously it could've developed into her later figuring things out but to go from that to that really long kiss without any discussion or time passed felt forced. And, they didn't need to put that conversation in at all. If they hadn't had that, then I might've bought that she was quietly considering Aang in a romantic light. She does have that moment with the Fortune Teller where she finally looks at Aang as a romantic partner. It wouldn't have been as definitive as Katara/Zuko is to me but it could've worked. But they chose to put that conversation in anyway. It's a big reason why I couldn't see Aang/Katara.

It was just so weird and I don't think it did any favors to Aang/Katara shippers either.

you're lucky you missed out on the ship wars. it was ridiculous.

So, I hear. I think I would've been bitterly disappointed by the ending of Katara/Aang if I'd kept up with the show in real-time. I started seeing hints of Katara/Zuko in the first book and shipped them outright by book 2. Seeing them mend their differences by going after her mom's killer and seeing how she reacted to Aang's overtures in the episode before the finale would've definitely felt like there was a possibility for Katara/Zuko going into the finale, so I sympathize with the shippers who felt upset on that score.

Most of my conversations with other shippers have been civil, although I actually haven't come across too many Katara/Aang fans (except those who were upset by what LoK did to Aang). I still keep my guard up though. I don't have any interest in shipping wars.

I saw my first ATLA episodes when my nephews were watching S3 for the first time and it was shortly after Zuko joined the group and I just assumed that he and Katara were going to get together because it was such a classic relationship.

I just can't with this pairing. I could have seen it in Book 2, though I do think Katara loved Aang. But at the point of Book 3, I can't see Katara ever being willing to be with Zuko.

Also, Zuko/Mai is my favorite ATLA pairing and I can't bear to break them up.

I hated Mai. She was dull and uninteresting. I'm glad they end up broken up.

I thought they were together at the end?

(I didn't hate Mai but I didn't really care about her either or her ship with Zuko)

They broke up in the comics. I don't think it's been stated who Zuko's daughter is yet, so they may reconcile. But, as of right now, they are broken up.

I should really read those shouldn't I?

Oh man, I love that ship. And I'm so glad I missed the ship wars. I would have loved to see them try to make it work in the story but I'm just happy I got to see what I did. <333
