46. I say, tell them you're a girl. I used to be a mod on a video gaming forum, and I don't recall people not taking me seriously because I was a girl. (Then again, the forum was dedicated to a Japanes RP game--I don't know if it'd change if it was based around, say, Halo or something.)

60. They're not really SERIOUS, I don't think. The game itself seems to have a "wink wink, nudge nudge" feel to it to me. Solid Snake being in SSBM and geeking out with Otakon over "Falcon PAAAAAAUNCH" only confirmed this in my mind. I think the creator just knows how to have fun with goofy spy plots, but still create serious characters out of it.

Dude, seriously? XD I mean, I do love my RPGs (my favorite genre, certainly--Pokemon and Golden Sun are partially to blame, my childhood and all), but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy Zelda or Soul Caliber or even Gears of War. (Yeah, I'm not sure why I'm so in love with Gears of War either, it's completely different from what I usually play, but that game is FUN.)

Yeah, if it's a SHOOTEN GAEM, there tends to be a difference in communites. Hence why I avoid the Halo group with a passion and just stick to Team Fortress 2. I don't know what it is, but that game attracts girls too. Maybe it's all of Dr. Tanner's yaoi...

I figure it's because it's better balanced than most shooters. Though I really am surprised at all the yaoi, since none of the characters are particularly slender or pretty. MORE OF THIS GENERAL TREND, PLEASE

Way I see it, the community changes heavily on a variety of factors, one of which being simply the culture it is bred out of - western or eastern.

Popular Western games, like FPSes, tend to bring out the testosterone loaded. Popular Eastern games (Let's say generally RPGs or even the Visual Novel genre) tend to bring in more girls - I say they could even be considered different from Western rpgs because I meet a lot more female fans of the Final Fantasy series than I do of, say, Baldur's Gate and the like. This could lead into a whole 50 page wank filled discussion that I'd very much like to avoid.

In general I prefer Japanese RPGs (which I suppose only helps to reinforce the stereotype)...it seems like in general they're more focused on plot, while western RPGs are more open-ended and maybe focused on leveling? That being sad, some western RPGs are awesome. Like Oblivion.

I haven't been in gaming fandom much recently, though, with college it's just hard to devote the time to 40+ hour games.

Then there's the adventure game genre, which suffered a heatdeath in the mid-90s on the PC and is starting to gain ground again, not least of which is thanks to the DS and a very large female fanbase, Phoenix Wright being the best example. Though I wonder if any of them have decided to trawl a few years back in the genre and discover the wonders of things like Monkey Island and Grim Fandango. Aesthetics seems to play a bigger part into what games develop what kind of community than I'd think anyone would like.

Of course, there's the occasional crossover resulting in Cognitive Dissonance kind of game. Devil May Cry, for example, clearly has a large male and female fanbase, both with generally entirely different perspectives on Dante and the game in general.

Oh man, I've ALWAYS loved the adventure game genre, ever since I was a kid. I've heard of Monkey Island and Fandango, but I haven't had a chance to play them yet--like I said, college makes it hard to keep up with gaming. (Well, college and all of the other fannish things I do.) I have daydreams about having a job where I can be lazy and play through all these games like half the day, though. XD;

I know what you mean about DMC, too. I'm not a huge fan of the series myself (...I'm lazy, and those games are crazy-difficult sometimes) but I know plenty of girls AND guys who are into the series. I can definitely see how it'd appeal to both genders.

Well, should you ever get the time for it, here is a fuckton of old adventure games. (http://abandonia.com/en/game/Adventure) You'll want to get a program called DosBox to run 'em, but it's good times all over. Grim Fandango is worth every minute it takes to find a copy and play through it - one of my all time favorite games.

Psychonauts and Grim Fandango both had Tim Schaefer behind them, a guy who knows how to make a game witty and charming, and did so for a long time for Lucasarts, before they decided "Fuck this noise", and focused exclusively on Star Wars.

Seriously, buy, download, whatever you need to do to get Monkey Island. It's one of the highlights of the adventure game genre. Grim Fandango's story is fantastic - the actual gameplay engine needed tweaking, but holy balls everything else is great.

Yeah, I saw I thing about Tim Schaefer on G4TV when Psychonauts was coming out...that's how I'm aware of Grim Fandango before. (I'd heard of Monkey Island, though, through some video game music website.) I've been wanting to play all of his games ever since.

XD I'll probably get it off Netflix. I work at a day care in a gym, anyway, so I HAVE to bring kid's movies in there...

Not that I'm complaining, though. I'm a cartoon geek in general. We had to do a speech on a visual art in my Public Speaking class in college and I did it on Ratatouille.

I think it depends on where the community is too -- I don't find it much of a problem here on LJ, but on a site like GameFAQs? Girls don't exist on the internet! And sure as hell don't play games because we're too busy in the kitchen. I've been active over there for years and I still just keep quiet whenever the gender question comes up.

And you can notice the difference in reactions for genres there when it does come up too.

Oh, nono, you're not like them, I mean at first glance I thought Autor fit in with the criteria. (He's nerdy, anti-social, incredibly awkward around the girl he likes, very very loud [while telling OTHERS not to be loud in the library, ironically] and prone to be a bit angry/pouty/etc when things don't go his way), although he might be a bit too (outwardly) selfish for your tastes...

Fakir might fight, though....maaaaybe.

*really just obsessed with that show, so automatically thinks of characters from it first*
