Soundtracks

favorite soundtracks/scores? (or a particular scene from a show/movie that is really taken to greatness due to the music that's playing in it?)

I could talk forever about soundtracks. I love them. They make up about half of my music.

Any of the Star Wars ones
Harry Potter (especially 1, 2, and 8)
Lord of the Rings
both Thor scores
Star Trek: First Contact
Shindler's List
Jurassic Park and Jurassic World
The Patriot
Far and Away (awful movie with a great score)
Doctor Who
Game of Thrones
Guardians of the Galaxy

Those are just the ones I can think of right now.

+1 to Thor & Guardians of the Galaxy (and most of the Marvel movies tbh), and Harry Potter

the episode "epidemiology" of community was already good but the Abba music playing in the background of the entire episode made it fantastic

Ahaha, yes. That was great. Anytime I hear an ABBA song now I think of that :D.

I also love how the music kept getting interrupted by Dean Pelton's little reminders to himself for this or that.

Gondor lighting the beacons in Return of the King. The visuals and context are great but the music absolutely sells it like nothing else.

All of them. But I got some favorites. Soundtracks account for about 80% of the music I listen to.

Movies: Gladiator, Schindler's List, Mad Max: Fury Road, Under the Skin, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Prometheus, Snowpiercer, Unbreakable, The Fog, Moon, Pan's Labyrinth.

Games: Bastion, Wrath of the Lich King, World of Goo, Silent Hill, Braid, Limbo.

Shows: Band of Brothers, Game of Thrones

I also have a love for "bad guy" themes.

Vegeta's https://youtu.be/h2JjjSKh6jM
Magneto's https://youtu.be/frqYK1EZ3O0
Darth Vader's https://youtu.be/-bzWSJG93P8
Nazgul's https://youtu.be/2DFYvwn_xLM

Also, the Punisher's theme in season 2 of Daredevil is great but I can find a copy. :(

Between the original Silent Hill soundtrack and Trent Reznor's Greatest Hits I developed an appreciation for dark ambient pretty early in life.

I just wish the Silent Hill OSTs were on Spotify so I could listen to them at work.

Just about all the soundtracks to the different Final Fantasy games are so amazing and some of my favourite music of all time really. I could just listen to so many of them over and over again, with VII, IX and X being my favourites. I'm super excited about what we've heard from XV so far too. I also love a lot of what Yoko Shimomura has done with the Kingdom Hearts music.

I thought Life is Strange had a really nice soundtrack too and have listened to it quite a lot on Spotify.

The Lord of the Rings soundtrack is also amazing and can bring me from smiles to tears in seconds.

As a child, I was all about the Now and Then soundtrack which is a movie in the 90s about a bunch of grown women looking back on their childhood in the 70s so it was filled with happy 70s pop tunes.

I love Harry Potter and Star Wars songs for background music.

There's this Korean drama that I don't even know what it's called, but Dong Bang Shin Ki had a song on it and that soundtrack was my soothing music through college.

Seconding Lord of the Rings, World of Goo, and Bastion, and adding Pokemon and Pirates of the Caribbean for being so iconic.

The LoTR soundtracks are probably my favourite movie soundtracks.

As for TV the Cold Case music was always done so perfectly at the end of every episode, it was honestly so hard to not cry during those moments.

I have so many great video game soundtracks. So. Many. Here's a sampling; I will gladly link more if asked.

Avoiding anything that relies heavily on licensed music otherwise it'd be all Wipeout all the time:

Thief: The Dark Project

Wasteland 1 (fun fact: this was composed by a fan as the original DOS game had no soundtrack)

Alien Trilogy just for the fact that it uses a lot of dark ambient/trip-hop (!) and isn't just James Horner's film score like EVERY OTHER ALIENS GAME EVER

Deus Ex / Deus Ex: Human Revolution

And as long as I'm posting DXHR here's XCOM. You can tell which tracks are Michael McCann's, if you're familiar with DXHR ;)

Metal Gear Solid

Duke Nukem 3D (fun fact: this is where my username comes from)

The original Matrix soundtrack is pretty great. I also like the soundtrack from The Brothers Mullen, even though the movie is pretty much shite. Also The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Disney).

I have recently fallen in love with the Bastion OST: https://youtu.be/oLA0vB9LCTM. It's really amazing, imo.

I also think the OST from Red Dead Redemption is really good, though sadly it's not loud enough for me to use as white noise.

Star Trek the Motion Picture has brilliant music by Jerry Goldsmith. I also love his score for Masada (never seen the film).

The LOTR film scores by Howard Shore are all beautiful, although I have a slight preference for The Two Towers.

Hans Zimmer is amazing, so many great scores, my most recent fave being Interstellar, but I still adore his score for The Thin Red Line, particularly "Journey to the Line."

James Newton Howard is another with many scores that I love, although I'll go all the way back to saying that Flatliners was the first time I noticed him, and it's still a standout score that really works with the movie.

I could go on for quite a while yet, but I'll leave it at that.
