faking OTPs for brown points

(Anonymous) 2016-03-31 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
but really is this a much of thing?

have you done it?

are there pairs that you assume other people are just saying it for those sweet sweet brownie points?

ngl, I said I shipped Troy/Abed because everyone else did. In reality, I'm fine with the idea of them as a couple but I didn't really ship it because I'm shallow and didn't find Abed attractive. I actually preferred Troy/Annie

Do you mean producing a fanfic/fanart for a popular or edgy pairing to get more reviews or to look cool, or literally behaving as if the pairing was your OTP? Because the former I could understand, but not the latter.

mmm well ive seen people who have one otp and then pair the 'left overs' with each other but when discussion comes along, they will tear apart every character except the otp...idk if that counts as brownie points

I did it with Haruka/Michiru. That was way back when the fandom was still trying to fight a rumor that Haruka's original incarnation was a man (the "Prince Uranus" story) and there was a club called "I Support Haruka and Michiru" for people who... supported them. As a couple. Just like canon.

I've only ever paid lip service to pairings I don't really ship to get in with BNFs. I can imagine other people might do the same.

How the fuck does one get "brownie points" for a ship? Is this happening in some non-euclidean alternate reality where no two brain cells actually interact with each other? Is this the product of another Microsoft bot, this one designed to generate fandom conspiracies by shoving random words together?

I think the most pertinent question is how the fandom hivemind mentality has entirely escaped your attention.

Well sure, I've seen a lot of people loose their shit over who ships what on The 100 this month, but it's about like watching people poke themselves with rusty nails over and over again, or being a Birther. Don't know which would be more wrong.

I'm in a fandom that's been embroiled in a ship war for the past seven years, and maybe it's because I'm on the far side of 40 so I have no fucks to give, but it's surprisingly easy just to ignore the shouting from both sides.

i haven't done it.

but i feel the frustration when it comes to f/f ships. because lots of people will say they ship it but when i go to look for fanfic there isn't any. so something's not adding up.

You can ship somethings and not read or write fic for it though. I have tons of ships I love that I don't have any desire to search out fanfic for (and I don't write at all).

There are some pairings (including f/f ones) that I ship, but am relatively disinterested in fanworks (both readong others' and contributing my own) - this isually happens with ongoing/unfinished canons, where I sorta want to observe and find out how the characters, relationship, and dynamics will canonically develop. But then, I'm probably much more of a neurotic canon detail nitpicker than most fans are, in regards to fanworks...

Not exactly, but I've had times where I wrote something as shippy when I really would have been happy with it being gen, because I wanted readers and didn't mind the ship.

"LOL Yeah I love LoVe!" - Me when I would talk to people about Veronica Mars because I legit feared my friends would stop liking me for not shipping the most popular ship.
