But I meant more in cases where someone lets their significant other do bad things, or does horrible things for them, seemingly for no reason other than loving and prioritizing them.

I think it'd help if you were more specific about what you meant by this scenario. It's just too vague. Did you have a real life example in mind?

AYRT - Well, as I said above, people who let their SOs abuse their kids, or teenagers who murder their parents. For less extreme examples, letting a significant other steal money from family and covering up for them.

I see. Well, I think the "why" can be really complex and different for every person, but the anon who explains how people convince themselves to remain in abusive relationships actually covers that fairly well. From our perspective, an act like someone stealing money is shocking because it's an isolated incident we're seeing from an outsider's point of view. But from the perspective of a person who's inside the relationship, it probably doesn't feel that shocking because it's a drop in the bucket. It's easier to become desensitized over time to someone's terrible actions if you're in a long term relationship with them.
