I don't think the ship is problematic. I think the fandom climate that pressures people into shipping it is problematic, and the best way to get rid of that is for people to stop giving in.

Hello, I don't think an age gap or a mentor/student relationship classify as "perfectly good" reasons not to ship something.

+1, I personally hate mentor/student and age gaps in ships but I'm not going around judging people on their shipping preferences. Those two things are usually quite popular!

Why the hell not?

It'd be one thing if OP was saying anyone who liked age gaps or mentor/student relationships was fucked up, but there's absolutely wrong with not liking a ship because you don't like those things, and most fandoms that contain a ship with those dynamics will have a not-inconsiderable portion of the population opting out of shipping it because they're not into those things.
