But yeah, the "don't like it when they're shipped with someone else" is another part of having a passive OTP for me, too. I'm not actively seeking out fanwork about them, but if those OTPs appear as a background ship, I'm happy enough, if the characters appear in different ships as background ships, I'm very meh about it and might not want to read further.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-01 10:12 am (UTC)(link)This drives me fucking insane in the Haikyuu!! fandom, and the Free! fandom too at times) because I feel like Kuroo/Tsukishima is a background pairing for like half the fics I want to read about other pairings, and that's honestly a pairing that I'd drop like a hot potato. x.X Anything that isn't Kuroo/Kenma is complete sacrilege to me. I just have a special little place in my hatebox for Kuroo/Tsukishima though. It's based on like...nothing, and it dominates this fandom. Blarrgh. Plus I can't see Tsukishima happy with anyone but Yamaguchi to be honest. They're so stuck to the hip that awhile ago someone created a fake interview hoax that claimed Tsukishima and Yamaguchi were 'already dating and had been for awhile' and tons of the fandom believed it, mostly because they're literally glued to one another, so the hoax wasn't that far fetched.

I, too, have a special dislike for the Kuroo/Tsukki pairing (since it breaks up both my active OTPs - YamaTsukki and KurooKenma - as well haha) so ... yeah, I get you. I mostly hate it when sidepairings just pop up without getting tagged because "lol they're so popular, EVERYONE just loves them and won't mind the ship being there for no reason". But I feel this way about a lot of "accepted as canon by a large part of the fandom" fanons/headcanons. It's annoying.
Another fandom that had this a lot was the MCU fandom with Clint/Coulson - they were just about ALWAYS there in the background when it was about a different ship and it was massively annoying.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-01 11:41 am (UTC)(link)Yeah, for me honestly KurooTsukki is something that irritates me on it's own merits. The fact that it directly breaks up two of my OTPs isn't helping of course, and it's a good way to find a pairing on my NOTP list (another huge NOTP of mine is Masamune/Yukimura from Sengoku Basara for basically the exact same reason, it splits up my two massive OTPs in one fell swoop) but, like Masamune/Yukimura, I also hate KurooTsukki on it's own basis. When my friend first showed me where Tsukishima and Kuroo interact I was like "....that's really it?" I guess....honestly I find that it hits basically the same notes for me as Masamune/Yukimura pairing, forgive me I'm having a revelation here.
Seriously:
-Both pairings overlook lifelong friends for a "rivalry" interaction.
-Both pairings obviously focus more on "becuz it's hawt" over everything.
-Both pairings have fans who claim that my OTPs just feel "more like family" which is code for "I don't find [character] hot enough to ship".
-Both pairings have characters that some people consider "plain looking" or "not hot enough". Katakura Kojuurou from Sengoku Basara, he's 29, has a scar on his face, and is generally a hard-worn kind of guy. And of course Yamaguchi, with his freckles and insecurities, isn't as "hot" to some people.
-Oh yeah, and Masamune eventually wants to kill Yukimura honourably in combat...so there is that. Even though they're basically "friendly rivals" to whatever extent you can consider "totally want to kill one another--but HONOURABLY and RRESPECTFULLY" can be "friendly", this still squicks me out big time. Not to mention Masamune almost literally killed Yukimura in a rage one time, so it's not like they're adverse to eventually killing one another. ....So yeah, I guess KurooTsukki has that going for it, no to-the-death-blood-combat? :P
But yeah, it's just one of those things where both of these pairings hit a LOT of the same general hate bullet points for me. The ignoring of deep, lifelong bonds in favour of quick interactions. The focus on how subjectively 'hot' one finds a pairing, etc. For me, I ship things based on how well characters get along together, how deep their bonds run. For Kojuurou/Masamune it's scenes like these (https://p.dreamwidth.org/57ecb90da1ea/-/i156.photobucket.com/albums/t1/phoenixsnow/sb/Shinsen-Subs_Sengoku_Basara_-_01-7.jpg) (http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd233/NakeBenihime/Date%20Masamune/DateKojuurouep1.png) (Yes, they're under their own little sakura tree up on a hill seperated from the Date army, and to make it even better sakura petals fall throughout this exchange and one lands in a sake cup, and the whole scene just looks super ~romantic~. :P Masamune literally calls Kojuurou his "right eye" and honestly my fanboying could continue for days about how close these two are, and what's even better is their historical counterparts were also lifelong friends and lovers as well, their relationship is considered one of the most influential of the Sengoku era.)
For Tsukishima and Yamaguchi it's the history between them, the fact that Yamaguchi desperately wants to impress Tsukishima, the fact that Tsukishima allows him into his own little private bubble. With Kuroo and Kenma it's about how excited Kuroo gets about Kenma, how completely and obviously he fanboys over Kenma. It's that easy friendship between the two. Kuroo gets the be the dork he is in canon with Kenma. I feel like the people who ship KurooKenma and TsukiYama have a better grasp on what makes these character great in the first place. They're not forcing Tsukishima to be the "cold, delicate tsundere uke" and they're not forcing the whole "teenage lothario, totally wearing a metaphorical leather jacket right now because he's just that hot, cool and sexy seme" thing for Kuroo. They don't forget that these are awkward teenage boys and not yaoi stereotypes.
....I'm raaaaaaambling I'm sorry. I just have lots of feels about this, and it drives me insane when I see a pairing basically dominate fandom (thankfully I'm only talking about KurooTsukki here, Kojuurou/Masamune is definitely the OTP of Sengoku Basara, I had to wade through a couple pages of nothing but OTP fanart on Google to grab those screencaps for you) that makes little to no sense at all.
