Re: Good News Thread!
(Anonymous) 2016-04-01 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)I stopped at the café in the school library for a bagel and shmear and some coffee, and met an elderly man who seemed to be waiting for closing time. I took him for one of the handful of homeless people who hang around the campus--you could do worse; some of the buildings are open all night, and if you can manage to look like you're studying, Security probably won't bother you. I thought: the workers are probably going to give him some of the leftover sandwiches and baked goods that might otherwise go to waste; that's really nice.
Then I realized that he had a small cart with a couple of large plastic bins on it! It turns out that the cafes and cafeteria at my school turn over all the baked goods and sandwiches and cut-up fruit and vegetables that are left at the end of the day to the "gleaners" who pick up food for a twice-weekly free perishables market and a daily free hot meal program run by several of our local churches.
This just made my day happier, because sometimes a lot of food is left at the end of the day, and it's nice to know that it's going to be eaten.
