It's okay to use a guide, but when people act all superior even though they used a guide the entire time.. It's a little bit annoying. (Personally, if it's a game I'm that obsessed with getting 100% on, I'll play through it once then go back and re-do it.)
Re: 72
If their friend was pushing how high and mighty they were because of their super special awesome completion rate, then yeah, I'd agree with the OP. But, they didn't really make that clear.
72 OP
(Anonymous) 2008-03-14 12:14 am (UTC)(link)Sorry, I guess it could be taken really horribly and I should have made it clearer.
Re: 72 OP
Also? That is all sorts of asshattery. WTH is up with your friend?
Me? I use GameFaqs because I like to know how to unlock certain things, or that wonderful sound Death Grunty makes in G.U. when I finish the Book of 1000s at the end of each game. But I don't think I'm hot shit for it. Um, it's GameFaqs. Which means someone ELSE did it first to make you that shiny FAQ. You're just following their lead.
Re: 72
Which is more impressive to you? Someone doing a paint-by-numbers, or someone doing a freehand painting?
Then, which would be more impressive.. Someone completing the game without looking at the guide (freehand), or someone who follows every single step listed in an FAQ to complete it (by-the-numbers)?
FAQs, walkthroughs, guides.. Most of them weren't made for you to use for the entire game. They're made for that time that you're in a pinch and may need a little outside help. I don't see using the guide as 'cheating' in that respect, but someone who has the guide open on their lap the entire time they're playing? It just seems a little bit like they have no brain to think for themselves, and don't want to venture out to go as far as using the trial-and-error method.. (Like someone who uses the Tomb Raider guide the entire time--it's hard to tell where you're supposed to be going, and you'll probably end up using the guide, but a little bit of trial and error never hurts!) The ends don't always justify the means.
Re: 72
Neither.
Painting and gaming are apples and oranges.
A game is a game. It's there to be played and enjoyed. Doesn't matter which way a person chooses to play it. It's their game. They bought it, and if they enjoy playing it with a FAQ printed out with neat little bulletpoints sitting on their lap the entire time, then they're every bit the gamer as the person who plays it straight through with no help from anyone.
Because, it's just a game. Winning a video game to me is not something to be impressed with, but expected. You buy the game to play and beat it, yes? And hopefully, you like the game along the way, and don't have too many urges to throw the controller across the room.
A gamer who uses guides and a gamer who doesn't use guides are, at the end of the day, just gamers. Like the rest of us. Play it how you like, but don't think you're better than anyone else because of your style.
Re: 72
That, to me, is not only lazy, but it even devalues the game. I never fully appreciate something if I cannot do it for myself. Like the 16th colossus in Shadow of the Colossus--I can get all the way up to his back, but I tried and failed to climb up to his shoulder so many times that I had my brother do it for me. I don't feel good about it, and I don't even count that game as 'beaten' because I'm so pathetic I couldn't do it for myself. Using a guide the entire game is kind of like that, to me.. I don't really think anyone can consider themselves a gamer if someone else does all of the work for them. Someone doing that might as well not even be holding the controller.
Re: 72
If you enjoy a game by using a FAQ all the way through, more power to you. I don't use a FAQ through every part of games I play, but I don't think I'm appreciating the game more than a person who does. Because that's how they have fun playing.
Play the game the way you feel like playing it. Have fun with it in your own way. That's what it's there for. Guide or no guide, if you enjoy it, then you're just fine. To think otherwise is entirely missing the point of games to begin with.
Re: 72
(Anonymous) 2008-03-14 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)Using FAQs isn't brainless. There's more to a game than directions. You still have to use strategy in the interim. I short, don't judge other people because they're "cheating." "Cheating" is using Game Shark codes or passwords, not using an FAQ.
