Arthur on PBS

(Anonymous) 2016-04-02 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to watch this all the time when I was a young kid and now years later I've for some reason started watching a lot of it on youtube out of nostalgia or something.

It's, like, a really good kids' show??? Sure it's silly and overly educational and when the kids are jerks their jerkiness is way nicer than it usually is in real life, but it's like, really good for an educational kid's show? I'm very surprised by how non-stupid and non-cheesy it was, and how well-thought-out some of the episodes were for address some kids issues.

PBS is just really good, man, public broadcasting isn't as much of a slave to ratings so it can do things that other kids' shows just don't bother with.

Man, I still watch the new episodes when they come on PBS. I don't think I'll ever stop loving that show. It teaches stuff without coming off as preachy.

I loved that show when I was younger. My favorite character was always Francine (but I liked all the characters, really), and I thought their teacher was cool.

Been ages since I've seen it, but your mention of it being on YouTube has me considering a rewatch now.

Same here, anon. The older episodes aged really well. Can't speak for the newer ones since I haven't watched them, but serious props to them for keeping the show going after so long.

I get the Crown City, you're dynamite song stuck in my head to this day.

ARTHUR WAS THE SHIT. So was Reading Rainbow with Lamar Burton. I'm pretty sure they're the reasons I want to write and illustrate children's books. PBS is the best network. If I had money, I would donate to them to keep shows like that on air (not to mention all the other programming I started watching as I grew older---definitely a window into different places, events, and people's lives I would not have encountered otherwise).
