The question is, would this even be an issue if the person defending someone from violence was female? If it doesn't, then I don't see why it should be an issue here.

I don't even really judge the "REAL MEN" thing too badly. It's a comparison between people who are too scared to act and people who aren't, even if it's couched in stereotypical gender roles.
