I agree, but I think Furiosa is pretty clearly the hero type. She's immediately introduced as throwing away her position and power purely to save the brides, at risk of her own life. For the brides, I'm not sure someone needs to be "heroic" to root for them. They were pretty well developed in personality, considering the role, and feeling how much they want to get away - not to mention how they help and care for one another - that makes them compelling enough, imo. They don't need to be out to save the world to be sympathetic.

Max is the only one I'd say is hard to tell if he's a good guy or not. In the beginning he seems chaotic neutral, if you will - doesn't care about fucking over Furiosa and Co., as long as he can get away. And since he's quiet and all, it's hard to get a sense for him. But he does end up choosing to risk himself to protect and support them, and it may be subtle, but it's certainly there.

I get the feeling it was probably the hype more than anything else making the movie out to be better than it was. When something is lauded as very very feminist even I go in expecting an in-depth, fully-fleshed female character whose personality matters and all, not a character who happens to be female in the typical male hero role of sacrifice and leadership. Having a female character in the role unusual and good, don't get me wrong, but it's arguable that she's any deeper in character than the typical action male hero, which I would guess is what disappointed OP on that front

I get the impression OP wanted something more obvious and there's nothing wrong with that, but... well, I feel like we saw different movies (though maybe I was just lucky of watching it before the hype and thanks to that I had 0 expectations).
