I get the feeling it was probably the hype more than anything else making the movie out to be better than it was. When something is lauded as very very feminist even I go in expecting an in-depth, fully-fleshed female character whose personality matters and all, not a character who happens to be female in the typical male hero role of sacrifice and leadership. Having a female character in the role unusual and good, don't get me wrong, but it's arguable that she's any deeper in character than the typical action male hero, which I would guess is what disappointed OP on that front
