Tangentially to your tangent: I've written a number of stories in a semi-popular fandom. Of my two personal favorites, one is the most successful fic I've written in that fandom by far, and the other is the least successful fic I've ever written in that fandom. I mean, it's less popular than remixes. It's less popular than death fic. It's a lead balloon, and I don't understand why, because I personally love it.

Connecting back to your main point: What have I done about this absolute travesty? Nothing. Because if readers don't love my (beautifully constructed, in character, neatly plotted) fic, and they do love my (rushed because I procrastinated and it doesn't even have a proper ending) remix in the same fandom, that's totally their prerogative. I may have certain opinions about their tastes, but in the end, that's all they are: opinions. And their opinions obviously differ from mine, and that's okay.

I know I'm super late to the party, but I think almost every fanfic writer I've talked to has had this happen to them. It seems the more you love and are proud of a fic, the less fandom at large seem to like it.

It happens to me on a regular basis. Spent months lovingly crafting and researching a fic? Only the diehards respond. Write something random I tossed off in a night? Instant popularity!

You're definitely not alone.
