I'm not super invested in having watched actor interviews and such, so I genuinely don't know, but like... if he was supposedly embarrassed to be playing a "stupid sidekick" character, how freaking out of touch with the source material and Sam's actual role/characterisation WAS he?

Because. Like... Sam is genuinely one of the biggest heroes of this narrative? It's not hard to figure out? I was aware of this after reading LOTR once as a naive eleven-year-old who sucked at subtext comprehension?
It's not an embarrassing role it's an awesome role. What.
