Mostly the Tolkien fandom. A bit in the Star Wars and MCU fandoms. For the most part I've abandoned my other fandoms. I've just found my fandom home, and I never want to leave.

SGA, once again.

Tolkien is my main one. I've been in SPN and a bit of MCU, but I don't keep up with things in a timely manner. I'm also big into some teeny tiny fandoms too.

Right now, RuPaul's Drag Race, Homestuck (I am so late to this party, it's like two in the morning and the DJ is about to pack up his gear and go home), some Star Wars. Wander Over Yonder is filling the void in my life left by Gravity Falls and Steven Universe.

None, really. I've got a few shows I watch/bands I follow, but honestly been burned by other people too many times to want to invest time in specific fandoms anymore.

Re: Fandom Talk

Does it count as a fandom if you're the only person in it?

I'm always in the MCU fandom to some extent, but I've been poking around in the Shadowhunters side of things as of late.

Somewhere on the slightly more Tolkien side between LotR and Dragon Age.

Narnia

(Anonymous) 2016-04-05 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I've recently rewatched the first movie, and started the second. I actually really liked what they did with the Telmarine people. I hated what they did with Peter but I didn't mind the Caspian/Susan thing too much.

Although, my biggest shippy feels are for Lucy with Tumnas and Trumpkin.

Re: Narnia

(Anonymous) 2016-04-06 11:28 am (UTC)(link)
I feel you anon. Although I was big on Caspian/Lucy before the films came out, I had way too many Tumnus/Lucy feels in LWW. I blame James McAvoy.

more like canon Tolkien talk

(Anonymous) 2016-04-05 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Does Middle Earth have magic? I know they have magical items and some specific people can be wizards. But is there just everyday magic? Sort of like Harry Potter without wands.

Re: more like canon Tolkien talk

(Anonymous) 2016-04-05 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Certainly not everyday magic, especially if you're strictly speaking about Middle Earth (and not the land in the west where gods and angels reign). And ME's got a long, long history. Magic, or rather supernatural power, is rarer in recent ages.

Re: more like canon Tolkien talk

(Anonymous) 2016-04-05 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
They don't have magic spells in a Harry Potter sense. It really does depend on what you mean by magic. Which is a deep topic.

Re: more like canon Tolkien talk

(Anonymous) 2016-04-05 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Not like Harry Potter. It's kind of a complicated question. For Elves, there would be everyday magic because Tolkien designated "magic" as an innate understanding of the world that Elves have. To them, it's not magic. Similarly, Dwarves can write magic into objects. Humans are generally not able to spellcast (but there's some waffling depending on when Tolkien was writing as he hadn't totally nailed it down). For humans, only the highest and most learned probably knew magic, and wouldn't waste it on anything that wasn't also high and mighty.

But, I imagine someone could buy a dwarven magical item, although dwarves aren't big on letting that kind of thing go. And you could get Elven magic (like the elf-rope Sam gets) at certain times in history. The Trolls had a purse that kept their money safe and talked, but then that gets into the complication of Hobbit vs LOTR and the different tone of the books. I would say that an ordinary person had no contact with magic.

I feel like the vast majority of "magic" in Tolkien is characterised more as natural ability of races with certain talents Men simply do not have, or have lost over time.

Elves can do things that could be viewed as magical, but they do it because they have better talents at moving (Legolas can walk on top of a snowdift that Aragorn and Bormir are up to their necks in and the hobbits are in over their heads, because Legolas is "light on his feet"), a better understanding of the world and the spirit world - things like that.

Now somewhere someone knew how to make swords that glow in proximity to orcs, someone knew how to make a green gem that supposedly helped heal the land (the Elessar Aragorn took his regnal name from in the book that got totally dropped out of the movies), crystal balls that could see distant place, if you knew how to use them, and rings that could do amazing - or terrible - things.

Even the Wizards were something greater than human, despite their disguises as old men. Their "magic", even then, outside the likes of hobbits who frequently used the word for things they didn't understand, was more a case of spirit beings in disguise doing what was natural talents to them, within their self-imposed restrictions for their mission.

The thing is with all of those, almost none of them were ever framed as being "magic" in the books and the one time "magic" ever got raised with an Elf, she (Galadriel) associated the word with trickery and falsehood that is more the actions of the likes of Sauron.

There is nothing I would love better than having the batfam in in a movie. It's the appeal of Batman to me. However, I think it's highly unlikely it will happen. Given the tone of the new DCMU, I don't really see a place for father-Batman, not unless it's for fridging purposes, and I'm sick of broody, angsty Batman.

The Killing Joke

I know this comic gets a lot of shit for the treatment of Barbara, but seeing the sneak peek for the new movie and hearing about the expanded story she's getting -- PLUS the return of Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill -- just makes me super fucking excited.

SAMURAI FLAMENCO

(Anonymous) 2016-04-06 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
I finished the series 2 days ago and I'm still overwhelmed by how much I love it.

Some days earlier I happened to look at all the merch for the 12345678 anime I don't care about and really wished there was a Hazama Masayoshi Nendoroid.

I haven't been on F!S for a year and came back today just so I could say that. Cause I have no one to tell.
