It was popular on LJ before Tumblr was even a thing.

Ok, but essentially they migrated to tumblr so the majority would be there right now, wouldn't it? Not that I was saying tumblr is the origin of it or something.

True. Most of the LJ-clone userbase moved to Tumblr, so at the moment it's a mostly-Tumblr thing.
