Not that I'm not horribly weirded out by otherkin/fictionkin but how is it dangerous? It's just weird as shit.

I really wish people would stop using """"""Dangerous"""""" and other word that imply real harm to things that can literally not harm you.

I mean, I know why they do it, they want to give credibility to their bullshit opinions and shame some people while they're at it, it just bugs me.

Lmao I wouldn't call it "dangerous" but I do think the whole "otherkin" thing is fucking stupid. And seeing how the "otherkin" community treats trans people, they come off as a bunch of assholes too.

I don't know what "fictionkin" is but it sounds just as dumb.

Indulging someone's fantasy that they're using to mask deeper issues means they may not be getting help for those issues, and that is troubling.

Of course some of those otherkin may be doing it because being a special snowflake buys acceptance on the internet. Hopefully they will grow out of it like any other phase.

I could see some of it being dangerous. Mostly stemming from people misdiagnosing themselves as "otherkin/fictionkin" based on hallucinations and weird feelings they may have. When instead they have mental/physical disorders that are dangerous to ignore.

For instance, symptoms of schizophrenia could easily be confused with this kind of BS. And the longer you go with undiagnosed schizophrenia, the worse the diagnosis.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-07 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Fandom's hypocritical contempt for otherkin's gone on for fucking long enough. God forbid you shits should behave civilly to people with different spiritualities or different values regarding identity.

I really don't draw a distinction

[personal profile] feotakahari 2016-04-07 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Some people think the world was made in seven days by a being that burns you for eternity if you stick your penis in another guy's ass, and I think that's fucking nuts. Some people think they're a reincarnated elf, and I think that's fucking nuts, too. But I'm never gonna argue people out of their religious beliefs, so one way or another, I have to live with them and negotiate boundaries such that we stay out of each other's way. Why not stay out of the way of otherkin, too?

I mean, the thing about otherkin that bugs me is the demand by (some) otherkin-like folk is that they use the language of trans and disabled folk to demand...whatever it is they want.

Also with fictionkin you get unforgivable BS like this:

I won't say dangerous, but this one clique of otherkins in my fandom is fucking annoying and need help to stop being otherkin.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-08 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I'm torn because on one hand it seems fairly harmless.

On the other I recently watched a fandom blowout where an (admittedly talented) cosplayer made a post about how he was the one true fiction kin of the character he cosplays so he will always be the TRUE character and the best one, as opposed to everyone else having fun and playing dress up.

Needless to say fandom reaction wasn't pretty.

As long as they don't compare themselves to transgender people, I don't care, they can believe whatever they want.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-08 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
i think in the vast majority of cases, people who identify as otherkin or fictional characters are only doing so on the internet. i'm sure that in real life, they aren't turning in their assignments and tests under the name "sonic (the hedgehog)". teachers and professors wouldn't put up with that shit.

i know there are some weirdos out there who run around pretending to be wolves and howling at things, but for most people the "identity" never leaves the internet. it's more about feeling extra special in front of internet peers.

It's a ridiculous delusion and I'd go so far as to say that in some cases it is almost certainly a sign of mental illness. I don't like it being accepted (in terms of being normalized, as opposed to recognized for the unhealthy thing it is) because normalizing something that is generally a sign of being mentally unwell tends to discourage people from seeking help that they need.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-08 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
It's always bothered me how the Internet lets people validate each other's crazycakes BS to a far greater degree than has ever been previously possible. Before, in the old days, if you were actually deluded enough to think you were Otherkin, and blabbed, a psychologist usually could get to you before you got to someone who could pat your head and tell you you're totally the incarnation of an animal.

Now, though, *throws up hands* I just can't even. Ugh.

It isn't really accepted in fandom at large. In certain, especially ridiculous sections of tumblr, maybe, but most of fandom thinks it's absurd.

I have something of a divided view on fictionkin, because I have, over the years, known two soulbonders who were relatively sane - at least they seemed so to me.

The first one was middle-aged and viewed the antics of other soulbonders with a bit of a jaundiced eye, holding an opinion that no matter how old the soulbond claimed to be, the age of the "body" showed through in their over-all behaviour.

The second one... well I heard about her through other people who were critical of her behaviour, but I also ran afoul of their clique and when I ran into the soulbonder in question, I was initially wary of her but ended up becoming friends with her and came to the opinion that her most active alter sounded more like DID than a straight soulbond.

But I have heard the stories of crazy soulbonders, the FF7 house, cultish groups, and the more recent Tumblr fictionkin who get really upset at anyone saying anything that goes against their "experience"... and I also have a wary attitude to most of them.

I really think, in the end, they should be treated with caution, and on a case-by-case basis.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-08 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Someone please explain what fictionkin even means. Is it like that thing where people believe they're really a wolf/dog/etc on the inside, only with fictional characters instead of animals?

I'm always wary of saying something is dangerous in and of itself, but I think fandom, especially on Tumblr, needs to be more aware of its own history and more willing to call people out for indulging in unhealthy behaviour when it could harm others.

I'm less bothered by Otherkin. For the most part they are only hurting themselves. Fictionkin, though, are taking someone else's character that they created and claiming they are that character. That's plagerism and a pretty shitty thing to do to the original creator.
