idk if I agree that fandom is universally accepting of fiction/otherkin. Sure there's a significant fanbase for that stuff within greater fandom but I think the majority of people active in fandom think it's dumb?

I wouldn't say it's universal acceptance so much as desensitization. People still think it's weird and stupid, but they've gotten used to it, so they don't question it as much.

That's true.

It doesn't feel like a necessary part of fandom, but it feels like an accepted part, at least in my circles, and it's scary. Because a lot of the biggest fandom abuse cases come from people like that who need help and instead end up with a cult of people to abuse. It's also highly disrespectful to people who practice religions that resemble kin stupidity or in the cases of people who have latched onto the fad, disrespectful to those that have mental illnesses that resemble or cause it. And there's the fact that it seems to lead to problems for trans people, especially when kin bandwagoners adopt cutesy pronouns... (fake edit: and tabbing back, there's the drama over who is the ~*real*~ (character name here), I suppose. I don't know how people can go on about how harmless fictionkin/otherkin are, aiee.)

I honestly choose to just slowly sever contact with anyone who gets drawn up into it, because it's a disgusting mess and I really don't have the mental health to deal with it.

(What do you mean I got off-topic really quickly and I need to put this under a different comment? I typed it here so here it goes)

lol no worries about off-topic, honestly I think that's what nesting comment threads are for!

Would you say the problem is inherently "otherkin", or that it's become a catalyst for various mental illnesses to rear their heads? I feel like people use the otherkin/fictionkin thing as an excuse to not get help when they need it and/or a means to prey on people. That doesn't make it inherently dangerous but I can see how it's become dangerous.

Mental health is a tricky topic but nobody's entitled to hurt others because they're mentally ill. I believe (and this is from personal experience!) that people with mental illness who have the potential to hurt others have a responsibility to seek help if they want to have lasting human relationships.

ETA: unrelated to my above paragraphs, but do you think it hurts the trans community, which you mentioned, by detracting from their credibility?
