BOOK CLUB - PLEASE READ

[personal profile] diet_poison 2016-04-07 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
May poll!

I have a question. This has been suggested to me by a couple of people. Pounded in the Butt by my Own Butt is apparently a short story, only 4k words. If that story wins, would you guys want to read the runner up in addition to have an actual novel?

Related: in the future do you want to have a minimum word count for books that run in the poll?

Comment here please with your thoughts!

Poll will close Monday!

I'd just skip the Tingle book. It was made in jest and I have no drive to read it.

Are you saying you will skip it or you think I/we should skip it? You aren't required to participate in any given month, of course. Are you the person who initially recced the book? (though if you say you are, how will I know?)

I think you were trolled and it sucks.

Maybe but I'm not sure how to avoid situations like this even if that's true, other than instituting a minimum word count or some other parameters for future recs.

I asked the anon who nominated it if it was a serious rec, and they said it was. Other than having pre-set parameters, there isn't any way for me to reject properly-submitted recs while still being impartial. Maybe they were lying, but how can I know that for sure? If I rejected it because I thought they were trolling, it'd be pretty unfair.

My thought is that this is why we can't have nice things (but you're a lovely person for trying to organize it)

Thanks, that's sweet!

I'm not sure exactly what you mean though - what would you like to do this month?

I voted for the Butt book and I meant it. Do we have a way to get it?

It's on Amazon. Did you even google? You could buy it if you're that interest. The idea of a book club is to buy the book right, not steal it?

Wow, you're being harsh for no reason. My question wasn't about stealing the book, it was whether we had decided on a specific way or site to get it from. A simple "no, we all get the book on our won, it's on Amazon" would have sufficed.

I hope you're one of the trolls and not part of the group.

Do book clubs usually give out free copies for some reason? I don't see myself as being "too harsh" but whatever.

No but some of them prefer to buy from a certain small bookstore or site to support them instead of Amazon and this author sounded niche enough to maybe have his own site that might not take a cut of the money.

Assuming the worst of people is a really offputting trait.

I mean, it's a 38 page "erotica" exclusive to Amazon, but sure.

The only formal RL bookclub I've been in collaborated with the local library to make sure there'd be enough library copies for everyone.

I'm for reading the runner up too.

A minimum would be good, but I think it could be fairly low? Like I could see some short stories being worth reading and analyzing together. Dunno how low it should be set though. I can't see anything really low (like 500 words) being voted up to win anyway.

But if we were going to do short stories maybe we could pick a few that tie in together to read. Or do the runner up book too.

Do you think we should have a maximum word count for the books? Because there's one book I was thinking of nominating but the length might make it an unattractive pick for some people.

If chuck tingle makes it I'll try to get it to read.
