I don't know anything about this, but as a lesbian I'm pretty irritated that you think "lesbians = for men".

Have you ever watched anime? Nine times out of ten that's exactly what it means, sure sometimes you get Utena or Haruka/Michiru or Lesbian Bears, but most yuri is aimed at men the same way most yaoi aimed at women and not gay men. So yeah, like the OP said, if this was 'lesbians on ice' the way some fans think it should've been it would probably be fanservice for dudes (and the characters would probably be in school the way most yuri anime characters are so that they can 'grow out of it' and get a nice man later on and become a proper housewife).
