Hi, Tumblr! triggered much?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-07 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
You can still have an all female anime cast and not have it aimed at men, I mean it has happened before. You even mentioned in your secret.

Whatever, I still want a lesbian ice skating anime and nothin' is gonna change that.
T__T

Eh. As a teenage girl I liked K-ON! and Madoka Magica because I thought it was about girl power and female friendships, turns out the demographic in Japan is aiming for adult men, not young girls.

Then I found out that lots of anime that have a majority female cast were made by men for men. Even if there wasn't any overt fanservice, they like it for the waifu's. It just grosses me out

You should check out Amanchuu that's coming out this summer. Diving anime about two girls, and pretty much all I can find about the manga is that it's SUPER lesbian subtexty.

It may be more ho-yay, but it may not, since many series seem to be Going There lately.

Of all the sports, why do they want the figure skating anime to be about girls? Wouldn't it be more feminist to have girls doing a "manly" sport, like... I dunno, American football? Or are they that weird type of gender-role-enforcing "feminists" that think boys are stealing all the "girl things" from girls?

And have they said anything about the cheerleading boys anime?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-07 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a basketball anime with girls btw: Ro-Kyu-Bu!

Also there's a new anime airing this season about girls and motorcycles.

Personally, I think figure skating just looks super graceful and pretty regardless of gender, so I'd be fine with either a male or female cast.

Now that I think about it though, it would be really cool to get a hardcore roller derby anime, kinda like Whip It.

Because figure skating is my favorite sport and I like girls...?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-08 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Role reversal isn't necessarily feminist.

Also they could watch older stuff like Princess Nine and have fun because it's a good sports anime with all female lead cast.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-07 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
This looks really cute! ♥

It does seem aimed at girls.

I suppose many of us used to consuming western media do think along the lines of "something excludes girls, it's anti-feminist." Like when you see "reverse superhero" projects where there are all women and one token male character and that seems wrong, but it seems totally normal the other way around. Like women don't make up half the world and often half the viewers. ;)

But Japanese media is a bit different, isn't it? Shows with mostly girls seem to be aimed at guys, and shows with mostly guys seemed to be aimed at girls. Nothing wrong with that.

This looks well-made and interesting. I hope it is. Thanks for the heads-up, OP.

loling hard at the stupidty (theirs, not you -you're right-, I wasn't aware that people were reacting like that)

(Anonymous) 2016-04-07 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
They know it's aimed at girls. They just think sausagefest shows aimed at girls are only appealing because of girls' internalized misogyny and shouldn't be perpetuated.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-07 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
So basically a bunch of arm chair psychologist with a guilty conscious trying to clean up fandoms by projecting their own issues onto everyone else? Smells like tumblr to me.

My only problem with sports animes with a male cast is the large amounts of queerbaiting.

Looking forward to seeing another Sayo Yamamoto show anyhow, where's she even been.

It's not really a feminism thing. I just wanted it to be about girls because:

1- I love figure skating. It's been my fave sport for my entire life.
2- I want more sports anime with girls. There aren't enough that aren't creepy (like that basketball show?).
3- I like stuff about girls.
4- Sayo Yamamoto is in charge and she writes awesome stories about women.
5- Chiyuki's performance in Death Parade was my favorite anime moment of 2015 for a reason.
6- I've been literally hoping for a decent figure skating anime about girls for like ten years.

So I'm disappointed it's dudes, but I'm sure I'll still enjoy the hell out of it because I love Sayo's Endless Night short. Plus, it seems they're doing their research being that they've hired an actual champion choreographer.

I get you, OP. And I agree.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-08 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
i think ppl were complaining because of the name...like they assumed it was going to be about girls bc yuri

(Anonymous) 2016-04-08 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
It's called yuri but about men? Nope.

I haven't seen it, but isn't figure skating something that's generally considered feminine (in the west at least)? I kinda feel like a show about male figure skaters which takes them seriously and doesn't make fun of them for being "girly" is a pretty progressive thing.

Yeah... in anime/manga it usually goes whole female cast = it's harem/ecchi/fanservice/cute girls doing cute things or a combination of these. And most of this shows ARE aimed at dudes, unless it's otherwise stated. I mean, compare shows like Utena and Sailor Moon to... idk pretty much any other show with an all-female cast that isn't aimed at teen girls. Think Prisma Ilya or Queen's Blade. Both have a large female cast but are intended to very different audiences.

Disclaimer: I'm not being judgmental and I don't care what you watch (because I'm not one to talk), but saying that more girls = more feminist has really not seen much anime.

(And yes, a lifetime of being an anime fan has made me very cynical.)

I don't know anything about this, but as a lesbian I'm pretty irritated that you think "lesbians = for men".

Okay, first, a lot of media that features young men in Japan is actually FOR a female audience, duh. Young and middle aged women are the largest drivers of slash (it's creepy to me in that it fetishizes homosexuality and erases females, yeah, but it's still a fact!). So an anime can have an all male cast and appeal very much to female viewers. I don't see how this is even a problem?

Oh wait, this must be one of those troll secrets. Well, congrats, ya got me!
