Amen. Racebending is such a stupid thing in general. It in no way makes up for the lack of PoC characters and I don't think it's progressive or advances social justice in the slightest.

So, you racebend a character on a piece of art that gets a few hundred notes. So, millions of people across the world still see a white character on their TV screen (or whatever media format).

Meanwhile, it reinforces stereotypes and white supremacist notions about what PoC look like.

See, that's what I love about this type of think, it reveals that they're actually really racist.

That doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. I mean, like the OP, I think it's dumb to racebend POC characters, but I don't see the problem for racebending white characters in Western media since they dominate. I mean, sure, I bet a lot of these artists who racebend white characters are white people trying to get PC points, but I know for a fact that there are plenty of POC artists who racebend white characters as well in their art. For them, I don't think it's necessarily about "representation" but instead just drawing what they enjoy. In that case, I don't understand how that would reinforce stereotypes since they're a POC drawing a POC character.

Sssh. I'm sure they think people of a certain group advocating for that group are the worst.

You mean just like you are doing it yourself (unless it's feminism)?

Dude I haven't done that shit since I stopped trying to make someone into that shit like me more. Fog lifted etc

Unless you're an MRA, in which case yeah I'll point and laugh at you, sorry.

" I don't understand how that would reinforce stereotypes since they're a POC drawing a POC character."

If your idea of racebending is that people of certain races MUST have certain features or they can't be PoC or of that race, then you're reinforcing racial stereotypes. Being a PoC doesn't change that.

Yeah, this. Like if you're black in fan-racebends you must have a wide, flat nose, and big lips, etc.

Or if you're Muslim you must be medium-toned brown and wear the hijab.

No one ever racebends to Latin@ and very rarely to any form of East Asian so apparently the only important "PoC" are black or South Asian (who must be Muslim), who must conform to specific genetic traits or they're NOT POC ENOUGH YOU PIECE OF GARBAGE.

Have you ever uh

And I'm just throwing it out there

Considered that black people with wide flat noses and big lips are sometimes fanartists

But don't they know that they're a stereotype???

(Anonymous) 2016-04-12 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
What they're meaning to say is that not every black person is going to have those features. But that is inevitably how every racebent black person is drawn.

I think this is especially pertinent in anime. Many characters are EXTREMELY stylized. I mean, to the point where they don't have noses or lips hardly at all, and they suffer from extreme sameface. In certain styles, I'd argue that racebending would basically be changing the hair and skintone, maybe the shape of the eyes a bit. i.e., very superficial.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-12 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Nah it's not limited to white supremacists. Any racial supremacy group would be in there too.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-12 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
yes. this is exactly my opinion on it.
