This is such a strange thing for someone to do. If every single character is racebent in someone's art (Bob is white in canon, he's black here; Sarah is Native American, she's Asian here; John is Asian, he's white here, etc.?? which is weird in and of itself but?) I guess it makes sense but treating Asian people like they're not a legitimate non-white presence in works is....weird as hell? :/

Amen. Racebending is such a stupid thing in general. It in no way makes up for the lack of PoC characters and I don't think it's progressive or advances social justice in the slightest.

So, you racebend a character on a piece of art that gets a few hundred notes. So, millions of people across the world still see a white character on their TV screen (or whatever media format).

Meanwhile, it reinforces stereotypes and white supremacist notions about what PoC look like.

I think the people who feel the need to make Japanese characters black because the anime didn't draw them "Asian looking enough" (because looking up the reason why anime looks the way it does is fucking hard) think the chracters were white because guess where the non-Japanese fan grew up? A place with a majority of white people, where some of them saw Sailor Moon and and assumed she was white because she has blonde hair and blue eyes, so because of this, they also assumed countries like Japan see the world through American eyes, which makes no fucking sense and shows how ignorant and unworldly they are assuming everywhere else is just like America, despite how unlike America a place like Japan is.

This irritates me because why not just do fanart of them looking more realistic and less cartoony.

I see what you're saying but I can't take offense that Japanese characters depicted with blond (or pink) hair and blue eyes are being drawn as black or even white. I love anime but there is some weirdo stuff going on with those shows that I blame on white cultural ubiquity but, let's face it, the anime companies play into it and so few seem to fight back against it.

Also, it's fan-art. It's just fan-art.

It did surprise me that black Sailor Moon became a thing with the fandom before Sailor Moon with East Asian features did. I find it hard to believe the artists never got flack for this.

I was just thinking about this the other day in the (lol I know) Dragon Age fandom. There seems to be a trend lately to portray Isabela as a black woman but she's already non-white? It's like people think being black is the ultimate pinnacle of POC.

Did my friend's ex write this? She's stopped talking, interacting, or acknowledging anyone that isn't dark-skinned enough for being "too white" -- including a mutual friend who is Hispanic. Ex is 1/4 Japanese, 3/4 white.

But why isn't she blond? That's black Sailor Moon, right? Asian people aren't naturally blond either, so why wouldn't black Sailor Moon be blond - specially since Chibi Usa (?) appears to have pink hair like her Asian counterpart?

That particular artist is black and draws every character as black, and she does mainly OCs. I see her Sailor Moon fanart as more like a reimagining of the characters in her own style than racebending them because she doesn't want them to be Asian. Plus unlike 99% of racebending fanart there's actually more effort to it than just making a character's skin a darker shade. I think she has a beautiful technique, personally, although I prefer her OCs.

With most racebending fanart I'd agree with you, but you shouldn't have picked an artist you didn't know because you picked a bad example.

That art is actually really pretty. You're just being nasty because they drew a character a way you don't like. One piece of art out of the billions of fan art pictures. They even drew the characters as black, another ethnic minority. I don't think I've ever seen a black Sailor Moon before.

"You suck"? Really? Way to judge a person's entire personality based on a single picture they drew. This is like the Zamii situation all over again. God, I am so tempted to make a judgement call about your entire personality based on this one secret, but to do that would be to give in to thoughtless emotional reasoning, and just because you decided to go there doesn't mean I have to follow.

I can sympathize with you and also think the art is really pretty.

I don't understand why people get in a snit about people drawing Usagi as actually chubby or outright fat, or Mako super muscular. When like, that's how they actually would be if not drawn by a mangaka who got 3 hours of sleep a week for a while when working on it. (like her notes in official artbooks even say that Usagi's supposed to be kinda chubby)

I kind of get it.

There's a prominent fanartist who draws one of the characters on Person of Interest so dark she looks black. The thing is, she's Persian--and there are fucking precious few Middle Eastern characters out there who aren't either terrorists or Princess Jasmine. Why do you have to do this to another minority? Why do you think making her black is somehow more progressive? She did sort of the same to a character on Agent Carter, darkening a character who was meant to be a Hungarian Jew. Does she know what these people look like? Being a Hungarian Jew is actually part of her storyline.

But at the same time--Sailor Moon is blonde. You kind of have to forgive them for not seeing a blonde woman as Japanese. And are black fans not supposed to want to see themselves in Anime?

Have you seen how anime portrays black characters?

I like the art, especially Chibi Moon's hair. Sailor Moon's kinda reminds me of human Luna's hair.

I'm not saying it's a tumblr thing, but it's a tumblr thing.

Racebending art is really popular over there. Also the fact that a lot of artists are from the US, some are POC and that influences them and it shows in their artwork. Also representation, I think. But I'm not from the US and this are the reasons I've heard from there,so take what I say with a grain of salt.

Aw, that's not nice. While there is some of it done for the sake of diversity brownie points, I think most of it is done by black fanartists! A lot of my friends are black cosplayers who get a lot of shit for being 'too dark' to dress up as anime characters, but this kind of fanart gives them a lot of confidence.

That said, people who edit a picture someone else drew to make the skin look darker are pretty awful.

I'm not gonna lie, I saw a BuzzFeed list with WOC BuzzFeed contributors being turned into Sailor Scouts, and I had the same response.

Mostly because, as far as I saw, not one of their WOC contributors was Asian. They all appeared to be either black or latina. So, I understand your frustration.
