I kind of get it.

There's a prominent fanartist who draws one of the characters on Person of Interest so dark she looks black. The thing is, she's Persian--and there are fucking precious few Middle Eastern characters out there who aren't either terrorists or Princess Jasmine. Why do you have to do this to another minority? Why do you think making her black is somehow more progressive? She did sort of the same to a character on Agent Carter, darkening a character who was meant to be a Hungarian Jew. Does she know what these people look like? Being a Hungarian Jew is actually part of her storyline.

But at the same time--Sailor Moon is blonde. You kind of have to forgive them for not seeing a blonde woman as Japanese. And are black fans not supposed to want to see themselves in Anime?

Have you seen how anime portrays black characters?

Out of all of the main characters on Person of Interest, someone racebent Shaw of all people? Why not one of the actual white characters? It's not like there is a lack of them. Sigh.

Well it's hard, because I'm not sure if it's "racebending" or that she's really bad at coloring skin that isn't white. She does everything on paper so it's not like she can cycle through a color wheel. She definitely erred on the side of way darker than the canon character.

It still bugs me, and I haven't even started that show yet!

Shaw has been the victim of "not POC enough" bullshit since her introduction. I don't want to elaborate too much, you said you haven't started watching yet. I'll just say that a part of fandom really loved saying that they were adding "yet another white lady" to the show. it really soured part of the fandom for me.

Have you seen how white people are portayed in anime? Their main trait is usually 'stupid'.

By your reasoning it'd be totally justified to draw all anime characters as caucasian just get some decent representation.

And Ami has fucking blue hair, but that doesn't make her Atlantean. Just because Usagi is blonde in a show where people have green, blue, pink, purple even fucking white hair without being albino or trauma, doesn't mean they are white and it's still an erasure of another minority because their skin color isn't dark enough for your tastes.

Way to be racist yourself. They're explicitly Japanese. Tsukino Usagi is not a white name, especially when the show explicitly takes place in Tokyo.

But it's kind of silly, isn't it? It's a Japanese character produced by Japanese culture. Sailor Moon isn't a minority. Sailor Moon isn't existing in a popular culture where there is little to no Japanese representation. Meanwhile American black kids watching Sailor Moon get very little outside educational shows meant for little kids.

You're really reaching here.

As for Usagi being clearly Japanese--well, no. Not if you don't grow up a weeaboo and get the crappy American dubs that try to make her seem as much like an American teenager as possible.

Oh my god, I know the Ana Jarvis art you're talking about. I've never wanted to punch someone's teeth in over the internet as much as I did when I stumbled on that shit. I didn't even realize "X doesn't look Y enough" was a berserk button for me until they did it to a Jewish character.

I just eyerolled; I think the thing is she headcanoned the character (and did some art before season two) this way, and didn't want to change it. She'd probably say there are black Jews (Ethiopians, etc) so it's okay. I mean I get that, it's just silly.
