coffee beans

I FINALLY replaced my french press and went digging through my cupboard. My coffee beans are whole, but the bag has a sell by date of Sept 2014. Should I toss and buy new?

I say toss. I had old coffee beans once and while it didn't make me sick or anything, it was not a tasty drinking experience.

Well, all it costs is some water and time to find out if they're drinkable. If they haven't gone rancid (which should be obvious by the smell) then they probably won't yield as flavorful of a cup of coffee, but eh, who knows.

If you ever find yourself with a surplus of beans in the future, keep them in your fridge/freezer for optimal results. Although even then, I'd probably toss the beans from 2014.
