talk about food/beverage

coffee beans

(Anonymous) 2016-04-11 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I FINALLY replaced my french press and went digging through my cupboard. My coffee beans are whole, but the bag has a sell by date of Sept 2014. Should I toss and buy new?

I say toss. I had old coffee beans once and while it didn't make me sick or anything, it was not a tasty drinking experience.

Thanks!

Well, all it costs is some water and time to find out if they're drinkable. If they haven't gone rancid (which should be obvious by the smell) then they probably won't yield as flavorful of a cup of coffee, but eh, who knows.

If you ever find yourself with a surplus of beans in the future, keep them in your fridge/freezer for optimal results. Although even then, I'd probably toss the beans from 2014.

Anyone have good snacks that can be prepped ahead of time? During winter finals I didn't plan well and ended up eating really poorly (there was a lot of "I need a study break. I know, milkshakes!") and I want to be better this time around. I'm already planning on doing some veggies and hummus, but other (/more filling) ideas are welcome!

Muffin tin omelettes, cheese and crackers, half-cooked potato (if you have microwave access and can finish it), baked goods

Fruit and yogurt. If you can't keep fresh fruit, or you won't eat it in time, try buying frozen fruit and mixing it in with the yogurt. We'll buy frozen cherries or blueberries and microwave them for 15-30 seconds and then add with plain greek yogurt, rather buy the yogurt with fruit already added.

I just had some rockmelon, and it was delicious. Also I made DIY limoncello today. I'm very curious as to how it turns out, but have to wait a week for it to steep.

Wow total misfire, sorry!

I keep lots of cheese and crackers on hand. PB and celery. Hard boiled eggs, or I'll make up batches of tuna salad and egg salad so all I have to do is scoop some onto bread for a sandwich. If you keep frozen fruit and yogurt on hand and you have a blender, smoothies can be good. You can even add kale/spinach and do the whole green smoothie thing if you're feeling brave.

I think I am going to try and make mochi this weekend. I should be able to order all the ingredients for it online.

I had to google what mochi was--seems really cool! What does it taste like?

I'm always curious what kind of mochi people mean; I grew up eating brown rice mochi that came as a refrigerated vacuum packed sheet that you cut into squares and baked in the oven until they puffed up (white hippy kid here, I guess the white rice kind are more common) but do you mean the ones that're stuffed with sweet bean paste or ice cream? I make the brown rice kind I'm used to sometimes, but it's a pain because I have to grind brown sweet rice into flour to make it.

In a little bit I think I'll bother my friend to get dinner with me so I can have some

Fuck now I do too. Why is your having fries contingent on your roommate tho?

So apparently Mountain Dew was originally created as a mixer for whiskey.

That sounds like it would be the same effect as Red Bull and vodka, without the downside of having to drink Red Bull.
