Stephen Fry says child sex abuse survivors should ‘grow up’

(Anonymous) 2016-04-12 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I like to feel angry and checking out the news always does the trick

“It’s a great shame that your uncle touched you in that nasty place — you get some of my sympathy — but your self pity gets none of my sympathy.
Self pity is the ugliest emotion in humanity, get rid of it because no-one’s going to like you if you feel sorry for yourself. The irony is we’ll all feel sorry for you if you stop feeling sorry for yourself — just grow up.”

Wooow that's ...wow. Trauma is self pity now?

Urgh, he seems to be one of those "I pulled myself out of my problems so everyone should be able to do the same or I have no sympathy for them" types. Hate those types of people.

"we'll feel sorry for you if you stop feeling sorry for yourself" is one of the most bullshit comments I've seen in a while. Saying no one will like you if you have self pity isn't encouraging actual healing - its just encouraging people to bottle up emotions and only present them in a way that is palatable and doesn't make people uncomfortable.

And of course all the comments on articles on this are praising him for not "bowing to the PC police"

Okay, he clearly has no idea how trauma actually works.

Wow, for awhile now I've tried to give Stephen Fry the benefit of the doubt, like maybe his quotes were taken out of context, but...wow. What a terrible human being.

Way to leave out the context there, anon. This was specifically in reference to people who use safe spaces and triggers as an excuse to claim that they can't possibly be exposed to even the word "rape".

This comment was still super insensitive and ignorant. I did read it in context. It does not excuse or make what he said any better. He took his comments way to far.

Stephen Fry loathes himself. Some of that probably spilled out.

"It’s a great shame that your uncle touched you in that nasty place"

Pretty sure that goes beyond safe spaces and triggers.

The context is right there in the link I gave and the context does not make his comments in any way appropriate because at THAT point in the confersruonsconversations he was talking about child sexual abuse, not PC censorship

"Self pity is the ugliest emotion in humanity"

I can think of uglier things. Unbridled hatred, for one. Lack of compassion, for another.

He does make a point that self-pity isn't helpful, but I don't see how phrasing it this way actually helps anyone.

sa

by "phrasing it this way" I am referring to the whole comment, not just the part I quoted.
