maybe try seinen?

Every time I hear seinen I imagine gore and sex. I'd prefer something that maintains light-hearted atmosphere but not as childish as typical shonen jump stuff.

Try non-romantic shoujo? Zero the typical romance tropes amd a more tight plot that the average shounen, but keeping the light-hearted adventures and character bonding.

Finding good ones can be hard because most people don't give shoujo a chance in the first place, but the good ones are pretty good.

Slice-of-life shows are probably a good bet, then, and if you like sports anime but don't like the shounen offerings, Free! is a good shoujo representative; strong focus on friendship, amazing animation (especially the races and scenery), and an engaging cast.
