I've noticed a bit of character division, but mostly here at FandomSecrets. I'm not on DeathNote Fic, though since DNYaoi (ehn) and R/L (yay!) keep me plenty busy. (o.o)

I think both Light AND L are misunderstood by a great deal of the fandom. Light is a tragic character -- why don't people get that?

Re: 65.

Of course he's a tragic figure. It's clear that he could have been an amazing individual if he had never found the death note.

That being said, he's still a douchebag.

Sorry, groceries take precedence over chit chat -- you know how it goes.(^,^)

Anyway, just calling Light a douchebag is oversimplifying, don't you agree? Or maybe not. I'm wondering if we have any mutual ground at all where we CAN discuss the matter.

By the way, the first time that I watched the anime, the way it ended made me soooo happy AND I'm anti-death penalty completely.

Re: 65.

[identity profile] goat-writer.livejournal.com 2008-03-16 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Of course. ^^

Well, I don't think his douchy-ness is the be-all and end-all of his character. Not by a long shot. I suppose that a more apt description would be that he's a naive, well-intentioned idealist gone horribly, horribly astray. I just can't help but hate him for it, hence the name-calling. I know that it's a rather immature oversimplification, but it is still incredibly satisfying.

I also think that he's the best antihero I've ever seen in any medium, Western or Japanese. Because he's not simple, and he's not a plot-device. That's part of what makes him so damn frightening.

"That's part of what makes him so damn frightening."

Okay. I bet this is his real crime in your eyes. Let me ask you this, then, if you don't mind. Are you fearful that his looks and charm will send the wrong message to the younger audience? Or is it the canon for which you can't forgive him?

I ask because, as I said, I felt very hateful toward his character after my first watching (which I stayed up for 40 straight hours to complete). I was damn near hysterical. *laughs* But after I settled down, it occurred to me that Light wasn't a happy person after he killed L. And when I saw the Director's version, it REALLY hit how very unhappy he was.

And it all started because of this stupid notebook. Not that it excuses any of his decisions. *shrugs* It's just that he was just a kid, who thought he was right, and when he met L he got scared. It's the pride that really annoys me, but again he was a kid.

So I can sympathize, I guess. ^.^

Oh no! I wasn't referring to his influence IRL, just what his character represented to me based on the canon. His character frightens me because it's something that could actually happen (and has actually happened: Hitler, Mao, Castro, Mugabe, etc.), albeit with influences more 'mundane' than the Death Note.

I see. Personally, I believe Near proved that Kira didn't attract the kind of mob who could follow through with a coup proper, but the possbility is there, yes.

Thanks for taking the time to talk with me. Sorry I wasn't able to get with you sooner. My friend is watching some episodes to catch up to tonight's ep. ;)

Could explain to me this part a bit? Why do you think so?

I haven't blown off or forgotten your question, I plan to get to it asap, k?

This got overly long. Sorry about that. (no I'm not) ^.^ It couldn't fit here in the comments section, but I did leave the URL for the full version of the Director's cut now badly subbed in English. Yay!

Because too many people don't get that tragedy (in literature) =/= something really really sad, and that calling a character tragic is not the same as calling him/her sympathetic. (Though I know there are many fans who find Light sympathetic; this is a bit beside the point, however.)

Going purely by the text, Othello is pretty much a bastard whose redeeming qualities get swallowed up by his bugfuck craziness. He is also a tragic figure. I think you could probably apply the same standards to Light and come up with a similar analysis, but to be honest I didn't finish the manga, so I can't say myself. At any rate, his struggle (in the first four volumes) does seem to stem from his pride and his temptation at the hands of the supernatural/fate/whatever, to the point where he (to me) seemed to be almost a Macbeth figure.

That said, I don't think it really matters if fandom "understands" Light or L as being tragic. It's manga, you know? I think it's okay to have fun with it and read it on whatever level works best for you personally. Lots of manga and video games and TV shows are Shakespearean in scope and take themselves very seriously, but that only opens them up to more opportunities for fannish goofiness, I think. But I am not at all in the fandom and, as I said, I haven't actually finished the manga, so I concede that things could be much worse than what I'm imagining.

tl;dr aside: yeah, I agree. :)

It's just frustrating to be in a fandom with so very many fen who APPEAR to misunderstand the characters. And for some unholy reason, I've come to care about these two characters far out of proportion than I usually do, so I'm finally getting why people get so bent when they perceive another writer or artist NOT get their character. *laughs* Yes, I am being silly, and of course I can enjoy a story in any form without the fandom, but I prefer having a fun bunch of fen to hang and oooh and aah with.

Don't get me wrong. :) I really like the R/L comm. ;)

Thanks for clearing the sympathetic vs. tragic thing for me. I dint no no bettah. *laughs*

Re: 65.

[identity profile] basiatione.livejournal.com 2008-03-16 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I understand. It can be very tough when everyone seems to love something that just goes so completely against your perception of a character. (Imagine if these writers/artists whose ideas don't mesh with your own were professionals and were allowed to play with the characters "officially." That's pretty much a huge chunk of the Western comics market, where I used to hang out. XP)

So I understand that it can be frustrating. And half the fun of fandom is having people to talk to about the characters you love, so if it seems like everybody disagrees with your pov...that would be frustrating.

The funny thing about tragedy is that in common usage, it usually just means something very sad or unjust (thus involving a degree of sympathy for involved parties), while in literature it generally indicates a kind of ironic flaw and/or conflict with destiny (which does not require the audience be sympathetic to the protagonist, allowing him/her to be more of an antihero). Sometimes it's hard to tell what a person means when they refer to a character or his/her situation as tragic, which I imagine would be...problematic in DN fandom.

Especially since Light is broadcast as being a tragic figure from the get-go, when Ryuk muses that there'd be no place for someone like Light in his own ideal world.

Anyway, sorry for rambling. I do understand what you mean, though. :)
