It looks awesome. I know nothing about the character. And I was honestly mostly interested in Tilda Swinton's character. I love when she goes androgynous for roles. The character is male in the comics, but from what I hear they are using feminine pronouns in the movie but going very androgynous with how she looks and acts. I'm just really excited about this.

I also know very little of it (my bf is the one more into Strange) Looks like they're still doing an origin story, but it looks wa cooler than I expected.

Tilda Swinton is the strangest casting choice as an Asian kung-fu master since Joel Grey in Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins.

Other than that my opinions haven't changed. I'm still deeply ambivalent about Cumberbatch as a casting choice and I still really, really wish they weren't doing the origin story in this movie. I think the visuals were impressive but it doesn't really move the needle for me either way.

I do agree it's a strange casting choice! But she does look sort of otherworldly so...that might work?

I'm ambivalent about another origin story myself, but I can see why in this case. And Cumberbatch...willing to give him benefit of the doubt for now.

They have to do the origin story for him. This isn't Spiderman or Batman and everyone* knows their origin story. No one knows who Strange is or what he is all about.


*Most people. I tested this theory with my coworkers. Everyone knew who Batman was except my boss (30 year old German who has been living in the US for 12 years). When he asked he said, "Was he bit by a bat or something?"

I also wish Cumberbatch and Ejiofor could switch roles, but I know it's too late in the game for sure. Aside from that it all looks pretty fucking cool

Can't wait for it. Looks like it is going to be pretty trippy, which will be awesome. Tilda Swinton is very bald. I hope Cumberbatch can keep an American accent reasonably well.


Sort of related: have you seen that the reviews for Civil War are coming out? They are all pretty good so far!

MOAR TRIPPY! I've seen some comic panels that were downright psychedelic and damn I hope the're going for that.

As for Civil War: yes. But I don't want to get too hyped. Also at this point I feel even promo material is getting spoilery so I'm blocking most of it.

I SO hope this movie will live up to my expectations, the suspense is killing me

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the character in the comics also sort of Asian cultural fetishism (at least the mystical bits)? I mean I get why people don't like that part, but it's not exactly a surprise?

Saw it today, and was very intrigued. And, of course, Ms Swinton is phenomenal, at all times, so.... I think it'll be fun as hell!

I didn't realize I hated Benedict Cumberbatch until I saw the trailer. He looks like he's trying to do a Keanu Reeves impression, but his face isn't expressive enough.

I hit Cumbersaturation at Star Trek: Into Darkness. Nothing in the trailer looks interesting enough to overcome that.

Looks like a relatively paint-by-numbers Marvel origin story with an uninspired lead (Cumberbatch had to have been the most obvious of obvious castings ever). Add in a what looks like a huge heap of anti-Asian racism and I'm even less interested in this film than I already was. Meh.

I'm worried they'll try to do a "Chosen One" version of the story, instead of the original premise of him choosing to learn from the Ancient One.

Oh, and I kind of love that the Ancient One is Tilda Swinton.

I really don't like Cumberbatch's American voice (granted I'm one of maybe five who's not that into his voice in general) and while I know the comic book counterpart was built around Asian cultural fetishism, I would have so preferred Jason Momoa at least someone other than a white guy in this role. NON-WHITES LIVE IN IDAHO.

I also don't care about Tilda Swinton very much, so her being cast as the Ancient One is kinda of a bummer (I realize they probably didn't want to write another ~mystical Asian character mentoring a white guy~ which could have been fixed if they hadn't cast a white guy lmao).

However the special effects are pretty great, like a souped up Inception so I'll probably eventually watch it for that.

I love Ben's voice but Doctor Strange has always been good-looking af and very charismatic in the comics so it's kinda... why. Why Benedelecte Cumbayayaboy? And due to the character's origins, I thought they could have used this as an excellent opportunity to get a non-white actor to play the part. But nooooo. Let's go with fucking Bendydick Cometbucket.

Meh.
