Asian cultural fetishism/appropriation ft. white actors and fairly by the numbers plot. I'm not enthused. :(

That's okay, everyone else is enthused. :)

Also, fairly by the numbers plot???? What are you even talking about. This isn't even similar in regards to other superhero origin stories.

It's a pretty basic "arrogant white dude learns errors of his ways" plot. That's pretty common in media generally, even if it's not in superhero movies.

But also, in superhero movies specifically, it's literally the plot of Iron Man.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I mean....normal guy has accident and everything changes: seen it. Superpowers are a mixed bag: seen it. Learning from the wise ancient shaman Yoda whatever: seen it. Some Inception stuff: seen it.

Not trying to rain on anyone's parade (except for all the Asian stuff like can we interrogate this), just disappointed.

You know that Asian people are going to love this movie right? I expect it will do way better than Ant-Man because it has Asian themes.

Ah, the singular Asian monolith. The Asian.

Uh. I was using the language you were using.

"Asian cultural fetishism/appropriation"
"all the Asian stuff"

If you want to be more specific? China and Japan are going to love this. Especially China. Marvel movies do great in the Chinese market. With the added "Asian stuff" it is going to do phenomenal.

That doesn't mean there aren't also Asian people from all over the world who are bothered?

I have no doubt the film will do well in Asia bc as you say, Marvel movies do well there. That doesn't mean that it's not failing to live up to potential/engaging in some troubling shit

I'm shamelessly unconcerned with the opinions of Asian people living in Asian countries where they're the default race and aren't fetishized. And Asian-Americans and other Asian Westerners won't have as favorable an opinion as them, I'm sure.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the character in the comics also sort of Asian cultural fetishism (at least the mystical bits)? I mean I get why people don't like that part, but it's not exactly a surprise?

Re: Doctor Strange

(Anonymous) 2016-04-13 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
meh. there are still people mad that Stephen Strange from Idaho (or whatever white bread midwestern state he was born in) with his parents Eugene and Beverly (or similarly super white names) is a white guy.

Oh it's not at all a surprise! But marvel had the chance to correct it in a multitude of ways--like maybe casting some Asian actors?!!!--and......didn't. And it's a bummer.

Re: Doctor Strange

(Anonymous) 2016-04-14 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, I don't really read Dr. Strange, so I may be confusing things, but wasn't the original character one of those kind of awkward stereotypes, the mystical magical Asian (villain? or just mentor?), and so they didn't want to go that way? I like that they mixed it up and put an androgynous looking woman in the part.

I don't know, I get the criticism, but it seems like sometimes when you try to avoid stepping on landmines, you just step on another one.

Re: Doctor Strange

(Anonymous) 2016-04-14 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
So instead of a "mystical magical Asian" they've given us a "mystical magical" Asian-eesque type (Asian dress in a building w/Asian architecture in a city that looks like it's in Asia, etc).

How hard would it be to cast an Asian actor and then avoid stereotypes in the writing of the character/plot? Why is that too much to ask in 2016?

Exactly, how is it "righting" a racial stereotype to cast another white person??

Basically, though I do think the plot and visuals look neat...not enough to pay for it.

I probably will, but tbh I pretty much see all superhero stuff.
