I don't blame you. Every time I see a pseudonym with a mysterious famous person behind it, I'm really curious, too.

I sometimes feel that statements like that are bogus, though. to me, if they really wanted to have a secret identity (so that their writing gets judged by different criteria?) then I feel that they shouldn't advertise it that it is in fact a secret identity.

^^ this. It sounds pretty fake.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-15 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, same. if i bothered with a secret identity in the first place, i definitely wouldn't hint at who I really was. better to just be some unknown nobody rather than 'unknown famous author'.

Exactly! I just don't get it.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-15 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
They want to be judged by their writing without their reputation but they still want people to read it. If they were just some random nobody their book would likely be unpopular. It's like when JK Rowling tried to write under a pseudonym and then had to come out because no one was reading it.

She came out because she was outed by the press. For what appeared to be a first time author, the sales of the book were actually pretty decent even before her identity was revealed.

Yeah, that makes sense: it's basically a marketing thing.

(For some reason I was thinking that the secret referred to a fanfic writer, which I realize now was completely silly on my part. Amazing how much clearer one thinks after a night's sleep. *g*)

(Anonymous) 2016-04-14 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
...How do you know this isn't just a clever fanfiction marketing ploy?

I would never ever assume that someone claiming to secretly being a bestselling author on the internet is telling the truth

(Anonymous) 2016-04-14 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
In response to the messages in this thread and the author I think it is referring to, I get it because this description is for more adult fiction with an additional name exclusively for fic. I think she writes YA in the Bestseller category and wants to keep it separate. I definitely believe it because of the length and quality of output, and understand why the three are separate.I completely respect that and have no interest in learning more or playing detective. I'm glad that I writer whose work I immensely enjoy is successful IRL. Still, I agree that it would be cool to know which YA books she's written so I could have more of her writing.

Same anon: and also to support her with actual money for the many hours of free entertainment. It's not purely selfish!

(Anonymous) 2016-04-15 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, how are there three categories?? /anon can't count

(Anonymous) 2016-04-15 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
The fanfiction, adult, and YA

(Anonymous) 2016-04-15 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
OP
Yes, I think we're thinking of the same person (though I had no idea about YA or not). I really enjoyed her adult series, so I agree that it'd be nice to know what other books she's written just to have more of her writing.

Astolat on A03 is Naomi Novik, but she doesn't mention that she's a published author in her profiles! I was quite surprised to find out. If I were secretly a bestselling author, I'd try to keep my fanfiction usernames on the down low for sure.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-15 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe because she has 55 works of American Idol RPF.
I know I'd want to keep that on the dl.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-15 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I did not know this.

Honestly I was going to read the Temeraire series but knowing that the author writes crappy Harry/Draco slash has killed that desire.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-15 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
...and Thor/Loki, Harry/Snape, 'misunderstood good guy Loki', 'Loki joins the Avengers', etc.

I also did not know who she was! I actually really love some of her SGA and Person of Interest fic though. Some of her stuff is a too porny for my tastes (just a personal preference) but she's written some favorites of mine.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-15 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
Not sure you're missing much, tbh. I got as far as the first book. It's cute, but very low on actual plot.

Ohhhh, this explains so much about those books.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-15 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Why are people assuming this is fanfic? Just curious, as I assumed it was some genre short stories or something. I've never seen anything like this on a fic. I'd be curious but skeptical.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-15 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
I know Ursula Vernon writes or at least wrote fic. And a bunch of published authors started out writing fic, probably not all of them stopped with fic once they were publishing original stuff.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-15 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
If I was a pro author there's no way I'd hide my identity for fanfics. And I wouldn't want to go with any publisher who insisted I needed to.
