I mean it's not like gaming culture has done anything of note in the past couple of years what would make people want to distance themselves from it, nope not at fucking all

yeah, agreed. I don't call myself a gamer anymore for that reason, though I wouldn't fault anyone for calling themselves that.

It's not really my whole identity anymore, anyway. I play games, but I'm not a "gamer"... I spend most of my life doing other things, and it's not who I am. People who take "gamer" to be who they are tend to be...immature at best, toxic at worst. :/
